MAY 29, 2012 LEGENDTORIAL

A little over a  year ago, when Jeff, through his charity, allowed me to have a 15-minute segment on Tuesday evening’s Racin’ Through History, I came up with the name of “Legendtorial” because Jeff had named me “The Legend” for reasons known only to him and his offer was  to allow me to talk about whatever I want. I presumed to envision myself as offering Editorial opinions on whatever the subject of the week may be, thus the name of this segment.  Over this time that Legendtorials have been heard, I have laughed, and hope I at least brought smiles to some faces, and I have fumed and fussed about every conceivable offense committed against me by any entity or person I did not particularly like.  I have stated strong opinions, which I’ve always tried to ensure were qualified as MY opinions, and such opinions are always subject to comment, pro or con, from anyone who wishes to comment.  I always offer my e-mail, legendtim83@yahoo.com for comments, and I answer each every e-mail received.  I have made many friends with my comments, and really strained a few friendships over comments I’ve made about certain issues.  But, please remember, what is stated in these Legendtorials are my opinions and you each are entitled to yours and each of you are entitled to comment to me at any time.

Tonight, I am going to an issue that causes me great pain.  Read On!

Sometimes after a race weekend, especially with one as busy as the Memorial Day weekend, there just has to be something that you want to get off your mind, or maybe out of it; or maybe, you’re already out of it and hoping to return someday soon.

Last week on these pages, I promised (threatened?) to have more to say about the “Who’s Who” list of new inductees to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. When announced, the list included Herb Thomas, Cotton Owens, Leonard Wood, Rusty Wallace and Buck Baker. Read On!

Memorial Day Means More Than Racing

Throughout the past week, my television and yours have run multiple spots for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend. Each time, the introduction to the spot brought forth the dulcet tones of Jim Nabors as he intoned the theme song of the race,  “Back Home Again, in Indiana”, as he has done for many years. Nabors’ singing of that song, and the haunting sound of a single bugle blowing Taps quite literally make the hair on my arms stand up as I shiver.  It is such a stirring way to announce that it is almost time for the race to begin.

And then, most years, the good folks at Indianapolis go and ruin the mood in the same manner we’ve become all too accustomed to in NASCAR. They go out and secure the services of some “Widely Acclaimed Star” or “Singing Sensation” to “perform” our National Anthem.  The Star Spangled Banner (or is that The Star Mangled Banner?) does not need to be performed! As the National Anthem of these United States of America, it needs to be offered with the honor and dignity that it deserves. Read On!

In a way, this Legendtorial is a follow-up to last week’s edition, but only by minimal regard.   If you remember last week, and if not, you can read it on the home page, I was on a rant against NASCAR, D.W., Mikey, and Danica.   If I hadn’t used up my entire 15 minute segment by that time, there were a couple dozen other issues I could have ranted on about as well.  I do find it interesting that from the several e-mails I received in response to that Legendtorial, only two took an adverse position to what I stated and those two took the adverse position because I was down on NASCAR, not D.W., Mikey, or Danica.  Both of those e-mails made very good points to be considered and I thank the writers for taking time to write. On Sunday, May 20, 2012, a close friend shared with me a full-page ad from Bank of America that appeared that same day in the Charlotte Observer, the local wrapper of fish where he and his wife now make their home. I’d like to share with you today, the exact wording found within the text of the advertisement regarding Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“In 1959, Bruton Smith had the vision to design and build what many race fans now call, “The Greatest Place to See the Race” — Charlotte Motor Speedway. Today the Speedway sets the standard in motorsports entertainment, allowing fans to truly immerse themselves in the sport. To Be In Danica’s Shoes

In the history of stock car racing there have been a handful of drivers who have completely polarized the fans. Those individuals had the presence, reputation, and subsequent tendency to draw a reaction of some sort from nearly every fan whether negatively or positively. In others words one either loved…or hated those drivers

Danica Patrick may have the potential to be the most polarizing driver of all time. Please understand this title or attribute has absolutely nothing to do with her talent or lack thereof. As a matter of fact the opinions of some regarding her talent …or lack thereof may actually be one of those polarizing attributes. Since the day she made her appearance on and into the NASCAR scene, sides began to develop.
She emerged into NASCAR racing after a mediocre open wheel career. Among some of the best open wheel drivers in the world, she had a career with good sponsors, good equipment and support, and consistent finishes, though not a champion. Some have opinioned that her open wheel career is not an adequate qualification for the attention she receives. Being a woman with that career seems to be the qualification. This is circumstance certainly creates opposing opinions. Read On!

I waited until Monday evening to write this Legendtorial because I didn’t want this diatribe to sound as rough as it would have sounded had I written it Saturday night after the race, or even Sunday afternoon.  I had several things on my mind which some would find to be negative and, truthfully,  they are probably negative, but what I am about to express are my feelings on several issues just because I’m allowed to. Whether you, the listener, agree or not, you will need to at least consider that my thoughts reflect the feelings and thoughts of many individuals who hang out here, or at least I believe they do. Hall of Fame Voting Closes at Midnight on Wednesday

That date, gentle readers, refers to the “Fan Vote”, so if you are so inclined, have at it. You can vote once every hour from now until then. Of course, when all is said and done, your vote will be one teensy-weensy fraction of one single vote, which is all the fans get. Personally, I think perhaps that’s the way it should be. Fans generally tend to be, well, a bit fanatic, which is where the word came from to begin with.

 

But I digress…

 

When this article goes to press, there are a number of folks that will cringe when they see my name and the fact that the title contains the words, “Hall of Fame.” I’m quite well-known around these parts for my rather strong opinion on the method of selection to that little private club, but today, we’re going to forego that. Next week, after the five new inductees are named, I’m sure your writer will have more to say, and it might not be gentle. We’ll see… Read On!

MAY 8, 2012 LEGENDTORIAL

Sometimes, if only rare times, certain events fall into place as if there was divine intervention, or, at the very least, all the stars were aligned just perfectly.  Or, it may have been the “Super Moon” we had Friday night, or was that Saturday night? Whatever it is, or was, tonight’s Legendtorial has the implication of special magic and not the Disney type.  Let me explain.

 

When I sat down to write the Legendtorial for this week, I checked my e-mail first, as I almost always do when I sit before the computer.  I never know what good news, bad news, or whatever awaits me as I hit that log in to legendtim83@yahoo.com e-mail.  This week, there was a note from Jeff to let me know that Harold Brasington, III would be the in-studio  guest this week and I literally froze at the keyboard for a moment or two.  I had intended to write my Legendtorial this week about Darlington Raceway and what a special place it was for me. Home Plate? Dinner Plate? Silver Plate? Nope!

This weekend finds us at Talladega, which means it’s time for my annual rant. To be perfectly honest; that track scares me to death! At the beginning of the race, I say a prayer (I do that for every race), then take a deep breath at the green flag and exhale when the checkers fly. The speeds don’t frighten me. Certainly, no one can be a race fan and fear speed. Rather, it’s the tight pack of cars, stacked four wide and ten deep for 500 miles, with the fast cars being unable to pull away from the slower ones. One mistake by one driver results in a huge multi-car accident that we’ve come to know as “The big one.” But it didn’t used to be that way. That situation is the direct result of a diabolical invention known to race fans as the restrictor plate.

 

Let’s talk about restrictor plates for a while. Raise your hand if you can remember Daytona and Talladega without them. As it’s been 25 years now since that happened, I don’t think that too many hands are waving. For those who have never seen “real” Superspeedway racing, let me tell you now that you have missed something special. Read On!
