Full Moon Plus Opening Night at Bowman Gray Stadium Equals Madhouse

meBy Jeff Gilder

I’m finally getting around to writing about my experience this past Saturday night at the infamous Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem, NC.  Taking in a race there has long been on bucket list. I can tell you, it should have happened long ago.

It was opening night for the 2013 season at Bowman Gray Stadium (BGS)..or The Madhouse as regulars call it. The moon was full, but well- hidden behind the threatening rain clouds. Slated for the night was a full compliment of short-track racing for a packed house. Please understand (if you have not heard) Bowman Gray Stadium holds around seventeen thousand fans. Read On!

Loss is Never Easy…But…by: Jeff Gilder

This past week end we lost a dear friend in the racing community.  John Ronald Pestana, age 57 died during a race at the All American Speedway in Roseville, CA. Ron Pestana was passionate about racing and his music. The music by Ron Pestana and the Pit Crew included songs that reflected his life-long love for auto racing. One of those songs, “Hot Lap My Ashes Away” describes just how much racing meant to him. The chorus says it all…“Racing is what I live for, it is the only life I’ve ever known, and if I die today, put my ashes in some speedy-dry and hot lap my ashes away”. Read On!

Am I Becoming More Patient With Age or Just Caring Less? Is That the Same Thing?… by: Jeff Gilder

For my entire life I have struggled with patience. I hate to wait for anything or anyone. I do not like dealing with people who are not on time…I’m always early. Even worse-I can’t stand it when folks do not see things my way.  You can imagine the stress this has created. But I normally charge ahead and continue my persistent quest to have things “my way”, though recently I’ve noticed a shift.

Something that has been a thorn in my ridiculously impatient side has been all the changes in NASCAR rules over the past few years. Why the hell do they think we need a chase? How can anyone perceive that the top 35 in points get a bye on qualifying? What is wrong with the long-proven “go fast or go home” scenario? And what the hell good is a lucky dog? If I race my ass off to put a guy a lap down, what gives anyone the right to give it back? Why do all the drivers have to drive the same freaking cars? And now, we hear rumblings or suggestions from Bruton Smith of adding “planned” competition cautions. These changes all represent something I refer to as “managed results”. You get my point…right? Aren’t you completely stressed over this stuff, too? Read On!

Tireside Chat-Danica Patrick

By: PattyKay Lilley and Jeff Gilder

Good morning Jeff, and thanks for joining me here by the tire stacks. They provide a nice private place to have a little chat, away from cameras and microphones. Last week you broached a topic that I’ve never discussed for our reading public, and that is Danica Patrick and my feelings about women in racing. I told you that one day I might, and today is that day. As you might guess, having been one for all of my life… so far… I’m all for it, with the one qualification being that she have the talent to be competitive. In my estimation, Danica has that talent.

Oh, I’ve heard all the comments, just as you have. Yes, she won only one race in an IndyCar, but hey, that’s one more than I have and one more than any other woman, living or dead. She has raced seven times at the storied Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with six of her finishes in the top ten. (A crash in 2008 relegated her to 22nd place) I’ve never even had the privilege of visiting there, let alone race there, but her record of performance in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is most certainly not only competitive but downright impressive! On the right track – Old-school racing drawing crowds back to Kingsport Speedway

On most every Friday night between early spring and late summer, racing engines roar to life at Kingsport Speedway. The small concrete bullring located in the Bloomingdale community attracts racers from across the tri-state area, lured by the promise of hard-nosed racing on a track that has challenged legends like Richard Petty and Richie Evans.

As the green flag falls at the start of the 60-lap Late Model feature, a pack of brightly colored cars barrels into turn one before exploding full throttle onto the backstretch. Read On!

To Be In Danica’s Shoes

In the history of stock car racing there have been a handful of drivers who have completely polarized the fans. Those individuals had the presence, reputation, and subsequent tendency to draw a reaction of some sort from nearly every fan whether negatively or positively. In others words one either loved…or hated those drivers

Danica Patrick may have the potential to be the most polarizing driver of all time. Please understand this title or attribute has absolutely nothing to do with her talent or lack thereof. As a matter of fact the opinions of some regarding her talent …or lack thereof may actually be one of those polarizing attributes. Since the day she made her appearance on and into the NASCAR scene, sides began to develop.
She emerged into NASCAR racing after a mediocre open wheel career. Among some of the best open wheel drivers in the world, she had a career with good sponsors, good equipment and support, and consistent finishes, though not a champion. Some have opinioned that her open wheel career is not an adequate qualification for the attention she receives. Being a woman with that career seems to be the qualification. This is circumstance certainly creates opposing opinions. Read On!
