Here on RacersReunion, y'all may have noticed my three recents blogs, Wilmington, NC: Cape Fear Racers, it's been a trip down memory lane. Some of the content was from memory, and some gained from research; it's pretty amazing where a single phone call can lead. While remembering the old Carolina Beach Speedway, one name came to mind, "what could just one phone call, hurt?" I asked myself, well, y'all know how it is, you call one person, and they suggest someone else and then someone else, and on and on.........a chain reaction set in motion.Last week, through such a chain reaction, I wound up speaking to the family that had built, owned and operated the old speedway. I was told that a scrap book had been kept of ALL the events at speedway. BUT, I was THEN told, the scrapbook had been given to their son, years ago, and he had moved away. I hardly had the courage to ask where the son and the scrapbook might now be. Talk about an emotional roller coaster! I had gone from mountain-top-to-valley-back-to-mountain-tip-top:MOM..........."he moved to OCEAN ISLE BEACH........."ME............ "W-H-A-T did you just say, m'am?"..........(gasping) "Ocean Isle Beach, NORTHCAROLINA???"MOM............(faintly)...."Yes, I thought you said that you were from Shallotte........."ME.............. "That's, only, SEVEN MILES AWAY........." (gasping some more)but then she could not find his phone number and it was not listed in the phone book and she told me he only had a cell-u-lar phone, anyway. The emotional roller coaster was not through, just yet.............BUT, long story short, THE scrapbook was delivered to me, TODAY, to browse and study at my leisure.........Whadd-y'all-think-about-that! Pretty Cool, a'int it!The surprises were just beginning, about the first thing to "fall" out of the scapbook was a envelope, mailed to the Carolina Beach Speedway and on the back of the envelope was the one-word return address:........ SHALLOTTE, NC............."What in the w-o-r-l-d..............is THIS?" (me, again)Here's a letter, 44 years old, from a race fan from MY hometown, to the owner of the Carolina Beach Speedway. Amazingly, this letter could be from the immediate present, it's THAT relevant in the dirt world.....it's a 1964 version of a message board..........check it out this timeless classic from an unknown author:Dear Mr. BurnetteI notice in the paper ever Monday after a race down there that all the right-up is about Spud Long (I a'int making this up, y'all) I understand he is a big favor dirver down there and can get by with anything. Like hitting anyone he wants to and get by with it. Or anything else he desires to do.Don't you think that the other drivers like to be given credit too, all of them are out there trying there best to do good and put on a good show. I heard about one driver going in Sunday with his car and you told him you hoped Spud Long would win. You know that didn't make him feel so good and he is a very good driver. Another thing, Donald Hill never gets any credit but to the crowd he is one of the best drivers down there. All the credit goes to just about 3 drivers. Well to me, if all the boys would stay away from there & drive on the other tracks, I'm sure they would get more credit and then maybe Mr. Long would win first place every Sunday and all the track officials would be happy. The track is in such a mess all the time, It is only tearing up everybody's cars. It is either to wet with plenty of holes or too much dust. How about some real clay on there & make the track right and then you would have plenty of business. And I'm sure the drivers would be happier.I will say again I believe in giving all the boys credit for their driving. Not just one or two but all of them and pleas stop that hitting on purpose before someone gets hurt real bad.Thank You!A Racing FanShallotte, NCYour track would be one of the best if it had real hard clay on it
