Coastal Carolina short track pioneer "Mutt" Powell lost his battle with health issues, and died Tuesday August 11, 2009. Mutt's racing career spanned the golden era of the 1950's to the '70's, from the Carolina bull rings to Daytona's high banks. Often teaming with fellow Hemingway, SC car owner, Marion "Preacher" Cox, the Powell driven, Cox built "famous
#50's" were a constant threat at area speedways. Mutt, perhaps, gained his greatest success late in his career at Wilson Co. (NC) raceway, winning the prestigous "Southern Late Model 200" in the early 1970's.
