"....a Car Just Like That.."

Tiny Hammerdown Speedway, in Red Springs, NC, it's just about as far removed from NASCAR as possible....... perfect. With the November edition in the books, the fledgling Cape Fear CARS (classic auto racing show) vintage racing club had just completed its unlikely-yet-miraculous sixth 2009 event. The evening's "crowd" had mostly left, and only a couple of street lights illuminated the pit area. My fellow club members had already loaded their cars and equipment, but since I had to change my coupe's left front tire (to fit the trailer) I was lagging behind my comrades.A baseball-cap seemed to emerge from the shadows, and, indirectly, make its way to my pit area. For some reason, I could discern the cap's "Evernham #9" logo, and a tall lanky figure approaching...."this your car.?" he began........."I remember one just like it, used to run at the old Champion Speedway, when it was a half mile at Fayetteville............I can't remember the driver's name, though.........but when I saw YOU out there on that track tonight, in THIS car.............""Earl Moss" I said, realizing my visitor was indeed speaking to me."Yep, that WAS his name", my visitor continued, ........."and he could really go around that track..........he was my favorite driver.............anybody that has a three digit number...........well, you KNOW he's purty fast................was this one of HIS CARS??"."Yes SIR" I answered, "He WAS fast and Earl Moss was my favorite driver too........used to watch him race at Myrtle Beach when it was dirt...........and I was a kid............but, this was not one of his cars..........Earl's was a '37 chevy and this one is a '37 Plymouth..........but I built it as a tribute"."Well, it's really hard to tell the difference, when they get cut down, anyway...............I believe he had a red sedan and the coupe........seems like he did" My vistor recalled."Yes sir, Earl did drive a red and white Ford sedan before he had the 300 coupe.......you are right!" I heard my self proudly recite. He sort of wandered off, after that, and I did not get his name. But my mission had come full circle. All along the restoration trail, I wondered what subject or theme my vintage racer should embrace. The further the project progressed, the more I realized it had to be an Earl Moss tribute car, even if it was not historically accurate. It WAS accurate to me, and that's all that really mattered, I reasoned. Looking at the bright orange-red #300, it's a time machine, and I'm always transported back to a 9 year old kid in 1963. Restoring the car, I'd hoped it would provide the same sensation for others. My "fan" was proof-positive, mission accomplished!

I raced against Earl Moss in the early 50s. What I remember about him most is that he was a brick layer. He was in the best physical shape of any of the drivers that I knew. The longer the race, the better he did. Thanks for your bringing back my memorys.

I can remember seeing Earl Moss racing at "The Dog Track" Moyock, NC back in 1962 driving with a neck brace due to an neck injury and smoking a cigar at the same time, I believe he won the race and their were a lot of fast cars there that day. Now that is really wanting to race when you are still healing from a broken neck.

Bobby, you never cease to amaze me how can turn a simple engagement into a story for the ages. I met one of the East Coast Flathead guys at Rockingham that remembered Carl Burris and was glad to see a tribute car painted for the Leaksville, NC native but I never thought to put it to the key board. Glad you are preserving your memories here for all to enjoy. I had a good time Saturday night though the track was slippery wet it was still fun to play tag with Rocket Rick in the rear.

Here's a site to see the race photos from 11/7. Another exciting night of racing at Hammerdown Speedway. CapeFear-CARS will be racing once a month in 2010 where we plan to venture out to other local and not-so local dirt tracks. News on CapeFear-CARS will be posted here on "Benchmark Racing" from time to time and events will be posted in the "Events" column on the right hand side of the main page.
