NASCAR: High Tech?...... LOL!

In the mid 1960's, GM's version of the 1/2 ton pick up truck featured a rear coil spring suspension system. And was it ever the pinnacle of technology: TRUCK ARMS, TWO SPRINGS, AND A PAN HARD BAR! (what will they think of next?.... Not too shabby for 1964). The summer BEFORE Neil Armstrong made the "......one great step for mankind", shade-tree-built late model sportsman cars were utilizing this set-up........... I know, me and my dad cut this system from a chevy pick-up and adapted it to a '57 chevy chassis, and topped it with a chevelle body. The classic late '60's Saturday night special. At the time, "Little" Bud Moore was terrorizing Columbia (SC) Speedway with this set-up.The Banjo Matthews-Junior Johnson-Ralph Moody developed NASCAR Grand National chassis shed its rear leaf springs for this system at about the SAME time. That was (count 'em) FORTY YEARS AGO. The wind tunnel developed, over-engineered, over budgeted, and down right ugly winged "race cars" gracing the nation's televison sets, have not changed one bit in this area. As a matter of fact Junior has stated........."they gonna really mess up if they ever leave that chassis me and Banjo made............." And, so far, they have not. Oh sure, they added a screw-adjustable "track bar", that every blessed radio/TV commentator goes on and on about..........."at the next pit stop, the Billy-Bob crew is going one round down on the track bar..........and blah, blah, blah", BIG DEAL.The modern, and infinitely bally-hooed NASCAR Car of Tommorrow, is essentially a 1968 Grand National racer! Any insinuation, of NASCAR racers and "high technology" is much to do about nothing, and tooting their own horn (not that they a'int made a carreer of such horn blowing). The most technically superior "stock car" on planet earth is the modern DIRT late model. Don't think so? Check one out, up close and personal. It's the space shuttle compared to the "Spirit of St. Louis". The modern 4-link rear suspension is among the most incredible stock car inventions of all time. And engines? The dirt guys have the standard 800 horse versions too, BUT weighing around 2200lbs, the rear end steering the car and the left front lifting, a'int just any ole rock-star that can drive one, either! So, the point, the "superiority complex" of NASCAR/pavement racing exists with its perpetrators.

Hey, Bobby, interesting post..Bobby,my father is believed to have put the first set ofTruck-Arm's underneath a race-car..In 1965,my father Roy Binkley put a set onCharlie Binkley's( hisbrother) 1962 Chevy Biscayne..Now,all the research I've done show's this to be the first year anyone had a Truck Arm suspension, but I need to be sure.My uncle Charlie (125#)raced this car at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, and couldrun with,or on some night'sbeat anyone in thesouth, except perhapsCoo-Coo Marlin(711#)..My father worked as an engineer at a company named AVCO, here in Nashville,TN,they specialized in Miltary aircraft pieces. So my father had accessed to a lot resources, especially for fabricated race-car parts..Bobby,any light you could shed on this subect matter would most defintely be appreciated. Thanks,Randy Binkley
