Beautiful aerial photograph/postcard of Starlite Speedway, courtesy of Steve Swanson. The walled 4/10 mile oval and grandstands are easily visible. The speedway operated from 1960 until 1978. Located off of US Hwy 74 between Charlotte and Monroe, NC, the speedway was demolished in 1985, a victim of growth, developement, and a tragedy.

Worked a GN race there in the mid-60's with Huggins Tire. Place got so rutted up you could lose a car if you weren't careful. Those were the days.

Caps came from Towel City Retreading in Kannapolis. I can't remember how much they paid Goodyear for the carcass but it wasn't much. They are in the custom tire business in Conway, SC now. Doing specialty stuff for classic cars.

The tragedy occured when James Sears, who I believe was John Sears brother, hit an opening in the guardrail and was killed in 1973.
