Forgotten Tracks Of Georgia

This week, we take a look at some of the great speed palaces we've had all over the Peach State over at Georgia Racing History.com .

Over the years, Georgia has had as many as 175 different race tracks to operate around the state. Some are remembered with great fondness, such as Lakewood Speedway, the Peach Bowl and Augusta International. But others, such as Suicide Circle, Jesup, Hollywood and the original Lavonia Speedway are not as well remembered and are in danger of being forgotten.

This week, GRH.com's Mike Bell tells about some of the tracks he's found over the years, and about the research that continues to tell the stories of the many racetracks that dotted the land in Georgia. You can read all about it in Mike's column this week over at Georgia Racing History.com .

Time is counting down - the folks here at RacersReunion.com are busily preparing for the inaugural Middle Georgia Racer's Reunion, to be held March 11-12 at the old Middle Georgia Raceway near Byron, Georgia. Former drivers, fans, and just friends of racing in general are invited. Admission is $5 for both days, with kids under 8 admitted free for this celebration of Georgia's Racing History. For more information, check out their web site, and we hope to see you there! GRH.com is teaming up with the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and the folks at GARHOFA as part of a Georgia History display, so come by and see us and hear about some of the great things we're all working on to help preserve Georgia's rich racing heritage! Thanks to Jeff Gilder and the folks at Racer's Reunion for letting us be a part of this great event!

On March 20, racers, officials and fans are invited to the inaugural West Atlanta Raceway/7 Flags Raceway reunion, to be held Sunday, March 20 at the American Legion Post #145 in Douglasville. It will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Susan Milam Morgan, daughter of Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Weyman Milam, is heading up the reunion and is working hard to make it into one to be remembered! Cost to attend is $15. For more information, contact Susan at samorgan5@comcast.net . We hope to see you there!

And, plans are underway for the second annual Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Night at Gresham Motorsports Park (the official race track of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame) on April 23. Hall of Fame members get in free with their special track pass (if you didn't get yours last year, no problem - we still have them in hand for you!), with a big autograph session planned for all our Hall of Famers! Plus, the 2010 Hall of Fame inductees, Ted Edwards, Ernie Elliott, Jack Etheridge, Laverne Kendrick and Jerry Wimbish will be honored in a special pre-race ceremony on the track's front stretch. We'll have more information as we get closer to the event, but you can have a look at photos from last year's event here, and get more information on Gresham Motorsports Park here .

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week on Feb. 25 in memory of Davey Allison (1961-1993). on Feb. 28 to Mario Andretti, on March 2 to Bubba Farr and on March 3 in memory of Tiny Lund (1927-1975).

Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend!

sure am glad to see the great racers of yesterday and the organizations to recognize them have come together and will jointly have a booth at MGR to honor the drivers and other people of Ga Racing history. This is a reunion of all past and present drivers from all the ga tracks and clubs, big and small. Whether you ran in the quarter mile short tracks and figure 8 circuits to the fast and furious paved half mile and bigger tracks, but not to leaver out those fabulous old drag strips like Camp Wheeler and Houston County. Lets all forget and forgive, well not forget but lets get along and have a great ole time. We had the greatest time back in the day so lets share our memories with others and remember MIDDLE GA RACEWAY. ----SEE YOU THERE
