Lakewood Speedway Was The Scene Of Indy Tragedy

This week, we take a look at one back at one of the most infamous moments in Georgia racing at Georgia Racing History .com .

September of 1946 was a brutal month. First off, the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta found themselves in the grip of a horrendous heat wave.

People tried many different ways to endure the heat and still enjoy a holiday weekend. Many of those were among the 33,000 to pack the stands at Atlanta's famed Lakewood Speedway on Sept. 2 to see a 100-lap Indy car event.

But by the end of the event, fans had witnessed a harrowing crash that left two racers dead and two others in the hospital. This week, we remember a Georgia racing tragedy over at
