This week, we look at one of the most popular short tracks in north Georgia's racing history at Georgia Racing History.com .

From the time it opened in 1959 to its closing in 1992, the Athens Speedway in Athens, Georgia was one of the most competitive and exciting dirt tracks in the Peach State. It was the proving ground for some of Georgia's all time greats, including Charlie Burkhalter, Charlie Mincey, Buck Simmons, Bud Lunsford, Tootle Estes, Charlie Padgett and more.

The memory of the great race track is kept alive today by the Athens Speedway Reunion, which will be held for the third straight year today. To read more about the track and its history, take a look this week over at Georgia Racing History.com .

And, as we mentioned, the third annual Athens Speedway Reunion, is set for today, April 14, 2012 at South Jackson Elementary School near Jefferson, GA from 10 am - 4 pm. You don't want to miss it!

In other news, please keep the following folks in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with various health concerns: Georgia Racing Hall of Fame volunteer and Peach Bowl Reunion organizer (and very dear friend to all of us at GRH.com) Susan Milam Morgan, as well Linda Sells, wife of GRHOF Inductee Leon "Slick" Sells.

Also, our thoughts and prayers are with GRH.com contributor Mike Terrell and his family over the loss of his sister, Karen, who passed away this week. Please keep Mike and his family in your prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with Cotton Owens, who lost his wife, Dot, earlier this week.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week on April 16 in memory of Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Bob Flock (1918-1964) and in memory of Tommy Moon (1925-2003), and on April 20 to Ron Barfield.

Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend!
