A Look At Old Tracks Of Northeast Georgia

This week, we remember some of Northeast Georgia's speedways over at Georgia Racing History.com .

Back in the 50s, little race track dotted the map all over Northeast Georgia. Mike Bell takes a look at some of these tracks this week, including Hollywood, Toccoa, the original Lavonia Speedway and Banks County, just to name a few. You can have a look at them with us at Georgia Racing History.com .

In other news, according to an item on AJC.com this week, it looks like both the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame are in danger of losing their state operating funds. The item reports that the State House version of the budget has funds set aside to archive and store the items at both halls, but operating funds would be done away with.

I don't know about you, but that makes me very glad and thankful for the folks up at the City of Dawsonville, who are striving to help us keep the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame alive. Mayor Joe Lane Cox and his city council have worked hard to make sure the Hall of Fame, which, as you know is located in what is now the Dawsonville City Hall Complex, stays open and operates free of charge, ensuring that Georgia's racing heritage stays alive and continues to grow. They also have continued to operate the Hall in a non-profit manner, with no charge to tour the Hall or the facility.

It might not be a bad idea to contact Dawsonville City Hall and say thanks for all they do to ensure we will continue to have the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame for many years to come. Without the actions they've taken over the last few years, we easily could have been in the same boat that the Georgia Music or Sports Halls of Fame now finds themselves in.

We're now just a month out from Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Night, which will be held May 15 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Georgia. Some of the greatest drivers in the history of Georgia - and racing - will be on hand for this great night of racing and remembering. Legendary Drivers, a Vintage Car show, Pace Laps, and a 50-50 fund raiser to benefit the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

We want very much for all Hall of Fame members, or family of members of the Hall of Fame to be in attendance with us for this special event. If you are a Hall of Fame member or a family member, please contact me at raceinfoga@gmail.com for more information. Also, if you have a vintage racer that you'd be interested in displaying, please send me an email at raceinfoga@gmail.com for more info.

And, for more information on the event in general, go to Gresham Motorsports Park.com .

The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame is pleased to play host to the third annual Lakewood Speedway Reunion, coming up August 7 at the Hall of Fame, located in the Dawsonville Municipal Complex in Dawsonville, Georgia

This year, we plan to honor the Flock Brothers of NASCAR fame, Tim, Bob and Fonty, who were among the winningest drivers of record at Lakewood. Along with the three brothers, we plan to honor the other members of the Flock family that made them a unique group in the annals of Georgia Auto Racing. T.C. Chambers has also been working hard to make sure we have a host of vintage dirt track racing motorcycles on hand to pay homage to the two-wheeled history that was written at Lakewood. Cost to attend is $15, which includes a catered meal from the world famous Dawsonville Pool Room. Reservations are required. Attendants are encouraged to bring any photos or memorabilia from the speedway. For more info or to RSVP, you can call 706-265-3256. You can also get more info at www.georgiaracinghof.com .

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week on April 16 in memory of Bob Flock (1918-1964) and in memory of Tommy Moon (1925-2003), on April 20 to Ron Barfield, and on April 21 to Bob Varsha.

Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend!
