Elliott Was Awesome At Talladega In 1985

This week, we remember the most historic and dramatic comebacks in racing history over at Georgia Racing History.com .

25 years ago, Bill Elliott was in the running at what was then named Alabama International Motor Speedway in Talladega, Alabama not only for a win, but to take a step closer towards a million dollar prize.

Elliott far and away had the fastest car, but a loose oil fitting appeared to derail his chance at victory as he lost nearly two laps on pit road.

What followed was the most amazing come from behind run anybody had ever seen. In that race, Bill Elliott and his little team out of Dawsonville, Georgia showed what can truly be done, no matter how big or well funded your race team, when you put your mind to it. You can read more about it over at Georgia Racing History.com .

In other news, this are shaping up for next month's Georgia Racing Hall of Fame night at Gresham Motorsports Park .

So far, all eight of our inductees from the 2009 class have said they will try to be there. We will be honoring those inductees in a special ceremony on the front stretch, where they will be introduced to the crowd, presented with certificates and given a moment to speak. We're hoping to see this become an annual event at the speedway.

Also hoping to be on hand is 1960 NASCAR Cup champ Rex White, Bud Lundsford, Charlie Mincey, Marvin Mills, Charlie Bagwell, Gene Felton and more members of our Hall of Fame family! We will also be having vintage race cars on hand, and they'll get to take some pace laps on the track. The speedway will also be hosting a 50-50 fundraiser for the HOF.

We want very much for all Hall of Fame members, or family of members of the Hall of Fame to be in attendance with us for this special event. If you are a Hall of Fame member or a family member, please contact me at raceinfoga@gmail.com for more information. Also, if you have a vintage racer that you'd be interested in displaying, please send me an email at raceinfoga@gmail.com for more info.

Again, the event will be held May 15 at Gresham Motorsports Park. For more information on attending the event (if you're not a Hall of Fame member), go to Gresham Motorsports Park.com or call 706-367-9461.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of Gresham Motorsports Park, congratulations to Chase Elliott for his win at GMP last Saturday night!

According to the Petty Family Foundation Facebook page, Lynda Petty went to Duke for another MRI on Monday, and doctors found that the brain tumor/cancer was completely gone! The entire Petty Family is very pleased and would like to thank everyone for the many, many prayers and thoughts as she went through a very difficult time! (Thanks to www.jayski.com for sharing this great news).

The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame is pleased to play host to the third annual Lakewood Speedway Reunion, coming up August 7 at the Hall of Fame, located in the Dawsonville Municipal Complex in Dawsonville, Georgia

This year, we plan to honor the Flock Brothers of NASCAR fame, Tim, Bob and Fonty, who were among the winningest drivers of record at Lakewood. Along with the three brothers, we plan to honor the other members of the Flock family that made them a unique group in the annals of Georgia Auto Racing. T.C. Chambers has also been working hard to make sure we have a host of vintage dirt track racing motorcycles on hand to pay homage to the two-wheeled history that was written at Lakewood. Cost to attend is $15, which includes a catered meal from the world famous Dawsonville Pool Room. Reservations are required. Attendants are encouraged to bring any photos or memorabilia from the speedway. For more info or to RSVP, you can call 706-265-3256. You can also get more info at www.georgiaracinghof.com .

Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend!

I remember watching the races on CBS back then, and on more than 1 occaision ,they would be showing the race from one of the camera cars and Bill would pull to the inside lane and the lead pack would drive by. The announcers would say"something is the matter with Bill" but he would slow down long enough to pick up either Cale,Ricky or one of the other Ford drivers and bring them back up to the front of the pack. That was pretty amazing.
