Some are probably wondering if the events in the past month of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season have really caused me to just completely give up on NASCAR. After a week I got to thinking, "Do you really want to stop watching NASCAR all together? I have been a fan for years and just one day give it up? NA. I could not do that, I would still want to give it another chance. So tonight I turned on the Coca Cola World 600. It is after all one of the biggest races of the season. I could not stand to occupy my time with other things while that was going on.
For many fans the issues I mentioned in my previous posts such as fake yellows, inconsistency, constant rule changes, the COT, cookie cutter tracks, the boring racing, the drawn out fields and the Chase are things that many people cannot stand about NASCAR today. I think most of us can agree that these are things that make it hard to enjoy a race. Those are the negative things. But I think fans need to focus on the positive things happening in NASCAR.
I mentioned the loss of The Rock and North Wilkesboro. We can still rest assure to know those tracks are not reduced to dirt or a landfill yet. We should also be thankful that we still have Darlington, Bristol and Martinsville. NASCAR still puts on some great races. They are not all bad. May not always be a Sprint Cup race, it could be a Truck, Nationwide or Modified race. Another positive is safety. The safety measures such as a stronger chassis and safety barriers have allowed many drivers to walk away. I think the coverage in on television, newspapers and the internet have improved. Live flag to flag coverage of a race was unheard of and now it can be viewed on cable and networks. For many of us, watching a race was either tape delayed or shown on Car and Track. Today's fans do not know how lucky they got it to see a race live on TV. Sure DW can be annoying but that is why we have a mute button. Heck it also allows you to have fun with the family calling a race with it being muted
One of the most positive things about our sport would have to be it's fans. Sure there might have been some jerks who threw beer cans at Jeff Gordon on the track, but for every jerk there are some great people. They are in the stands and in the camp grounds. They are on messageboards or in groups like this. They are the ones who offer you a beer. The ones who support the sport and go to a race to spend quality time with their families and bringing them closer together. The ones who travel miles away to see a race. The loyalty and dedication is amazing. Some of which have supported driver charities. The NASCAR community is one of the most hospitable groups around.
Do not get me wrong. I do not hate NASCAR but I never have been so close to the brink of actually considering giving it all up all together. Disliking it on Facebook is really just a drop in the bucket. I realize that was immature and silly. I think the issue is my interest in it is not as strong as it used to be. But after thinking about the good things NASCAR has, it makes it hard for me to give it up all together. As long as we not allow the negative things to keep us away, we can still enjoy NASCAR by remembering the positives.
