Clyde Mangum
L.O. Stanley (Mangum 22)
I use to stand in the turn at Starkey Speedway, Roanoke Va, beside Mr Stanley, this was 1952, I was 12 yrs old. He was the greatest Machanic on the cerite. As time passed 60 yrs later I went to his home at Meadows of Dan Va, and spent some time with him and his wife,(Priceless). I gave him one of my caps,as the picture shows.
Clyde, Thanks for posting a picture of Mr. Stanley. It is a great honor to have known him. He built the engines for the Mustang owned by Jack St. Claire from Roanoke and driven by my dad Wayne Andrews to the 1972 Grand American Championship. He taught me what a true set of matched belts was. I also had the pleasure of visiting him and his wife with my dad. He showed us his 50 Merc. and what he called the largest flathead in the world. He also showed us some the ideas that got him in trouble with Nascar. I remember that he was fond of telling stories about his racing experiences with Curtis Turner who he called Lead Foot. A true pioneer in racing he is one of the reasons that dad has always said that one of the best things about his racing career was the people that he got to know. Thanks again, Dennis
