I pick Tony Stewart, not because he won the championship, because he adapts and overcomes and has really become the poster boy for NASCAR, hard working, team owner/driver, speaks his mind, don't take crap, is versatile and a well rounded driver (no fat jokes intended).

I'll say Tony, too. Not only because he's my favorite (Carl's second on my list) But even though Tony doesn't particularly like to sign autographs, etc, he's a nice guy when you see him. And most of all, he is a driver, and that's all there is to it. He's won 10 (I think) championships since he began driving cars. That ranges from go-karts, to midgets, outlaw sprints, iroc, Indy, and Nascar. And he's won a race in every thing he's ever driven. Atleast two for every series, because he's only got two Truck wins. You could put him in a Pinto at Eldora and he could probably win. He has class and style. He doesn't drive like you would think. Like every one has already said, that race in Homestead was just perfect and they way he drove that thing really showed how bad he wanted a third Cup.

I was really kinda surprised that Tony didn't get the MPD award, but there's always Jr. Nation to prove me wrong.

When you consider the lines at the souvenir haulers, its hard to argue with the Jr result. But he is not my favorite. Mine is Tony Stewart. I've not always liked his attitude, but love the way he races. I also like the fact that he can drive anything, he's rough around the edges, and that he doesn't look like a freakin sports model. He's a cheesburger eatin, beer drinkin, racer. I can identify with that.

Tony is hard to beat. Not my favorite but a very good pick.

"He's a cheesburger eatin, beer drinkin, racer. I can identify with that." Really Jeff, that is the bottom line, Tony is a race car driver, not a politician and he doesn't put on no errands to be someone he's not.

Hard to not go with Tony. He's just the quintessential racer's racer. Travelled in time from the 50s and 60s to show the boys today what a race driver ought to be like. He is a champion on the track yet a down-to-earth person off of it.

He is a class act and so is Ward. It was a very happy time at Richmond when Jeff won there in the Exide Roush ride. I also got to set up a National Geographic Explorer special for Jeff at the time. What a pro.

National Geographic Explorer to Film at RIR NASCAR Races
14 August 1997

RICHMOND, VA - The highly acclaimed television program "National Geographic
EXPLORER" and host, Boyd Matson will visit Henrico County, Virginia's
Richmond International Raceway September 4-6 filming NASCAR racing during the
Commonwealth of Virginia's biggest sports weekend. "EXPLORER" will follow
South Boston, Virginia's Jeff Burton in particular and chronicle his exploits
before and during the September 6 Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 Winston
Cup Series race.

New York City's Pangolin Pictures has been contracted by National Geographic
Television to film the "Host Wrap" with Matson at Richmond International
Raceway, Kevin Bachar will produce and direct the segment.

Pangolin Pictures produces documentary films for such distinguished clients
as Discovery Channel, Reader's Digest, National Audubon Society, Disney and
Fox TV, in addition to its efforts for National Geographic Television.
"National Geographic EXPLORER" airs weekly on Turner Broadcasting. An air
date for the Richmond International Raceway NASCAR segment featuring Jeff
Burton hasn't been set.

"Pangolin Pictures and National Geographic Television are really excited
about the idea of filming the "EXPLORER" host -- Boyd Matson -- at Richmond's
September 6th Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400. With the numbers of NASCAR
fans and viewers increasing rapidly, it is a subject that we are sure many
viewers would love to watch," predicted producer/director Bachar.

Richmond International Raceway is the world's only motorsports facility that
features NASCAR's top three series on the same weekend. In addition to the
Saturday night Winston Cup Series race, "National Geographic EXPLORER" will
be at RIR during the Friday night Autolite Platinum 250 "Showdown at
Sundown!" Busch Series Grand National race and Thursday night Virginia is for

PK says "There's hope for this sport, if they'd just leave it alone and let it run itself more."

That sounds like a good prescription for the government too!!!
