For Immediate Release
Myrtle Beach, SC, January 11, 2012 In conjunction with the Cleveland County Fairs 2012 Spring Into the Fair event scheduled for April 20 th -22 nd , the fairgrounds will host the RacersReunion Vintage Championship Series on Saturday April 21, 2012. This series will offer several divisions of racing, exhibition, and show of vintage race cars. To accommodate the series, the fairgrounds will construct a dirt oval track in front of the grand stands in the middle of the old Fairgrounds Speedway that is responsible for significant local and NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) racing history.
To say we are thrilled to be part an event that returns racing to an historic venue like this is a huge understatement, said Jeff Gilder, RacersReunion founder and race promoter. In an era when race tracks are closing all over the country, it is indeed special when an old track reopens. We consider it a privilege to be part of this great event and to be involved with excited folks like those at the Cleveland County Fair. This years Spring into the Fair event will be one to be remembered.
In addition to racing on Saturday, there will be an autograph session including legendary race drivers who competed at the old race track. The list of names of those who competed in the NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) series is a virtual whos who of racing history. Ned Jarrett, David Pearson, Richard Petty, Neil Soapy Castles, Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson, Fireball Roberts, Marvin Panch, Cotton Owens, Lee Petty, Tiny Lund, Brownie King, Paul Goldsmith, Johnny Allen, Billy Myers, Jimmy Helms, Henley Gray, Stick Elliott are only a few of the great names to have contributed to the rich history at Historic Cleveland County Fairgrounds Speedway. An exhibit of racing history and memorabilia from the speedways past is planned as well.
Hosting the RacersReunion Vintage Championship Series is just the beginning for racing at this facility. There are plans for a weekly racing schedule at Historic Cleveland County Fairgrounds Speedway. Were very excited to be able to bring this series to the Spring into the Fair event , said Calvin Hastings Manager/Promoter for the Cleveland County Fair. Being able to utilize the Fair facility for multiple purposes is one of our goals for the upcoming season and beyond. We feel bringing racing back to the fairgrounds along with this event will have a significant economic impact. I cant wait to meet some of the great racing legends who made the history at Historic Cleveland County Fairgrounds Speedway.
