In today's NASCAR world we usually have to hear the latest recording act in whatever genre butcher The Star Spangled Banner nearly every week throughout the season. How refreshing it is that Martinsville Speedway and its third generation head, Clay Campbell will have the famed Highty-Tighties Regimental Band from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets perform our National Anthem on Sunday.

And you can bet your spit shined boots that it will be a TRADITIONAL National Anthem. Thank you Clay Campbell. Thank you Martinsville Speedway.

Va. Tech Band To Perform National Anthem

3/25/2012

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Regimental Marching Band will perform the National Anthem prior to Sundays Goodys Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, keeping alive the tracks custom of traditional performances of the Anthem.

The regimental band, better known as The Highty-Tighties, was formed in 1893 and is the oldest collegiate band in the Commonwealth of Virginia. They are a field band, and provide military music for all cadet activities. The band performs in many parades around the country each year, most recently the St. Patricks Day parade in New York City two weeks ago.

It is very important to us, and we believe, to our fans for the National Anthem to be performed in a traditional, patriotic manner, said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. We know Virginia Techs band will do an amazing job in performing the Anthem the way it is supposed to be performed .

On Saturday, prior to the Kroger 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, a brass ensemble from Martinsville High School will perform the National Anthem.

From the band's web site:

In 1917, the Regimental Band traveled to Washington, D.C., and marched in their first Presidential Inaugural Parade for President Woodrow Wilson. The Regimental Band has gone on to march in eleven Presidential Inaugural Parades. Impressively, the Regimental Band was awarded first place in 1953, 1957, and 1961. Just before the 1965 Inaugural, the parade was declared a non-competitive event, and a few days later the Highty-Tighties marched past President Johnson as "Retired Champions". The Highty-Tighties effectively ended the days of competitive Presidential Inaugural Parades!
