Brother Bill the 1st chaplin for NASCAR. When he started, he traveled in his Chevy station wagon lettered up and decals on the front fenders. Then he got the small chapel trailer he pulled for his church. Richard Petty was one of the first big name drivers to step up and help with the money.

I was on a road trip with Bill as a teenage kid, when we were stopped by construction for road paving, it was August in Alabama, and the man standing on the hot pavement that day with the temp well over 100 was looking real weak... Bro Bill reached into the cooler and handed the man a cold beer and said, "the lord works in many ways," and we drove off. The look on the mans face was one I will never forget.

There are a bunch of fun stories out there about Bill and some of the funny things that went on back in the day. Bill was from my home town Gadsden Alabama.

I have one of the sew on patchs for the uniforms that Bro Bill gave away also.

Bill is the one that told me about this web site. We wrote a book together about Bill's life, and on this past NASCAR DAY weekend, Bill visited Maurice Petty and Richard for the first time in many years.

Even though the books done, I would still love to talk to you about some of Bill's adventures,

this site launched in January 2008. Ever since the very early days, folks have been showing up here in search of the "Racers' Prayer".
