And from the 1968 Sports Illustrated cover story on Curtis:

The National School of Safe High Performance DrivingCurtis Turner, directoris a natural outgrowth of Turner's racing involvement and interest in business. A week's course costs $500. Located at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the school is designed for anybody whose job demands fast driving, like ambulance drivers and Turner's old friends, the police, prospective race drivers or just anybody who wants to learn how to handle a car at turnpike speeds or above and, in emergencies, spin a car with control and dexterity. The school is also a typical Turner venture, boldly begun, a money-loser now but with excellent prospects of being a success. A second school has opened at Phoenix, and a third is planned for Oklahoma City.

Turner's reason for the school is simple enough. "It's something I've always wanted to do," he said. "I just got an idea for it one day, and here it is."

Had no idea something like that existed over 40 years ago! Just imagine half of the cup guys today participating in that. You would have maybe 2, as a publicity stunt.

from what i understand it was a pretty tough comprehensive course - not cheap for those days - lots of drivers worked there as instructors - not just the ones listed on the original brochure - pretty good line up though - if you pull up the popular mechanics link you will notice stick elliott name on the roof of the car - this is the richard howard owned howards furniture number forty seven stick drove in the charlotte races - stick elliott also worked as an instructor at the school - when elvis did speedway stick took him for a ride and spun the car through the grass - gave the king quite a thrill i was told .

Thanks for taking the trouble to scan all this. I first read about it in Edelstein's book on Curtis. Must have been a hoot to be part of that school.
