Memory Lane: An Intimidating Win At Cayuga Speedway

In this edition of Memory Lane, we look back at the Motion 250 NASCAR North tour race at Cayuga Speedway. The date was August 28, 1983 and the stars of the show were Grand National drivers Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison and 1980 Winston Cup champion, Dale Earnhardt.
Due to a conflict, Earnhardt wasnt able to make the practice the previous day, but showed that he could master a track with little practice. The three NASCAR stars arrived on a NASCAR corporate plane and headed for the track where Earnhardt jumped into a Sam Ard built car and proceeded to set a fast time of 20.881 seconds. This was nearly two tenths of a second faster than pole sitter Wes Rosner. He would proceed to turn even faster laps in the final pre-race practice session.
Earnhardt started 21st in the field and began moving to the front of the 33 car field on the first lap and by lap 23 he had moved up to fifth. By lap 37, Earnhardt found himself knocking on the back door of outside pole sitter Bobby Dragon, who led from the start. On lap 47 Earnhardt took the lead and wouldn't relinquish it for the remaining 203 laps. He then started to lap the field and by the 97th lap he had lapped all the cars that were still on the track. It took Earnhardt just another 20 laps for the NASCAR star to put another lap on the field and if not for a lengthy and what Earnhardt later called an unnecessary pit stop, he may have put another lap on the pack. Three drivers managed to get within one lap by the end, Randy LaJoie, Claude Leclerc and Dick McCabe.
Earnhardt was the only one of the name drivers who was still running at the end of the first Grand National North race ever run at Cayuga. Bobby Allison retired on lap 86 after his car began to smoke badly and was black flagged to the pits. Allison returned a few laps later in Barney McRae's car. McRae received burns to his foot from the cars hot transmission tunnel. But Allison retired for good on lap 147 when the engine failed. Buddy Baker was in the pits early and parked the car after 120 laps with an overheating engine. Oakville's Jr. Hanley retired with a similar fate on lap 104. Three time Cayuga track champion Jerry Makera retired after 72 laps. The hot weather took its toll as only 14 of the 33 cars in the starting field, completing the race.
Earnhardt, who said it was an easy track to drive and was similar to Martinsville, earned $5,000 of the $50,000 US purse for the win in front of the largest crowd in the tracks history. More than 21,000 fans came through the gates for the two day event with 13,500 for race day alone. Earnhardt, who was the first Grand National driver to win at Cayuga had just one regret. He missed his daughter Kelley's 11th birthday, but I'm sure he was forgiven with the convincing victory.
