Once I complete my blog series about Lee Petty's victories in November, I may need to do some data analysis. I think I'll review each of his wins to see how many were accompanied by controversy - at least controversy that was documented.

Today's post again involves Lee Petty ... and controversy. But to be fair to Lee, the stories I've read seem to indicate the root cause of this dust-up laid more at the feet of NASCAR than it did to the driver of the #42 Oldsmobile.

The Grand National cars rumbled at Piedmont Interstate Fairgrounds in Spartanburg, SC. Bud Moore's two cars were the class of the field - an especially satisfying run with it being in Bud's hometown. But note that I mentioned Lee Petty and controversy. So yes - spoiler alert - neither of Bud's cars won.

Read on for more including a recap of the race excerpted from Perry Allen Wood's great book, Silent Speedways of the Carolinas .

Curfews can be tricky deals. Henrico County, Virginia, the site of the Richmond International Raceway had a curfew that came into play once we began racing on Saturday night. In one instance, several rain delays really pushed the envelope on the race not finishing before midnight.

Amazingly, the entire Henrico County Board of Supervisors happened to be guests in promoter Paul Sawyer's private Raceway suite that evening. The race concluded after the midnight curfew.
