The Last Dirt Track DanceRichard Petty made history when he won a 200-lap race at the half-mile State Fairgrounds Raceway in Raleigh on September 30, 1970. It was the 42nd race of the season, the 989th major event in NASCAR history,and the last dirt-track Cup race in NASCAR ever sanctioned.Petty, driving his familiar No. 43 Plymouth, started sixth, and led one time for 112 laps to post the victory. It was the 15th win of the season and 117th of his career.As he was in most areas of NASCAR racing, Petty was one of the tour's best dirt-track racers. I was at that race,Richard borrowed Jabe Thomas's car,1969 Plymouth Roadrunner.It was painted a darker blue than Petty Blue.

You know Johnny, I think todays Nascar driver could put on a good show on dirt in a cup car. I'd like to see a couple of dirt track races a year in Cup. The real good show would be the trucks!! They love the beatin' and bangin'.Pete
