Who is your Favorite Overall (any class), DRAG RACER of All Time ??
General
I like Bob Glidden...he was always in the hunt. Also kinda like that Wally Bell guy too.
RIP. Performance Spring is 6 miles from my house. A quality product and company.
Thanks, using the right numbered keypad solved my problem too. Many thanks!!
Some of the guys Rahal mentioned were cool, but my list starts with my local guys I rooted for growing up on short tracks in Michigan, now those guys were COOL!!
Jim, I never got to Spartan either, but went to a track just east of there in Birch Run, Michigan named Dixie Motor Speedway. It always attracted drivers from all over the state...not just local drivers. Joy Fair, Ed Howe, Jack Goodwin, Bob Senneker, Mike Eddy, Tom Maier, Donnie Roberts, Mickey Katlin, Benny Parsons and Danny Byrd all raced there. They raced both Supermodifieds and Super Stocks on the same program until the SuperMods went away in 1966. A great 5/16 mile low banked paved track with lots of action. BTW, both Dixie and Spartan are still going strong even though Spartan lost their long time owner and promotor "Poor Paul" Zimmerman last year. For your info, Marty Blume is working on a history of Spartan Motor Speedway book...should be really good!!
Here is my idea of a roadster (or Hot Rod class), as we called them. Basically stock body cars with no fenders or hood and some didn't even have a roll bar. This one is a Ed Beste car driven by Jack Goodwin at Detroit with a flathead engine. Note the black pipe roll bar which had no effect what so ever. The others looked more Indianapolis or Sprint car that you had. This car never lost a race it finished...119 wins!
When someone mentions roadsters, these cars come to mind that johnny put up. They were raced at the Motor City Speedway in Detroit and looked very similar to these cars. Dangerous cars!!
I remember on Bobby Unser's radio show that he once took Chris Economaki's microphone and threw it when he was in no mood to talk. Maybe it was Bobby Unser.
Mr. Penske has certain expectations from his drivers, if you don't meet them your career at Penske Racing will be short. I've seen him do this a lot in IndyCar racing. They don't call him the Captain for nothing. Gary Bettenhausen was fired because he wanted to race Sprints and Midgets when Penske wanted him to focus only on IndyCar. Penske won, Gary lost.
I hope Joe Gibbs follows suit.
