I wish it still inspired the excitement and anticipation for me it once did. That is quite a picture of Buck and that 1958 Chevrolet. Great memories.
Now this could be neat thread to maintain through next Feb - daily countdown with pic of car number matching the days.
That is my plan Chase
You should have started nine days earlier, LOL
It is already very obvious that when this thread reaches the day of the race, we are going to have some excellent pictorial history of the sport. Good going Jerry!!!!
Ya got me! Had ole Red Foote saved for today. Watched this Eastern Bandit many a Friday night at Southside. He liked Richmond so much he moved there.
(previously posted at RR by Russ Thompson in Asheville race recap - Frog Fagan in #75)
This version from the NHOF burns me. Has the 1972 thru late 70s era Winston Cup Grand National Drivers decal on it - even though this car is from 69-70. GRRR! Bah HallBUG! Ha.
I'm sure the hope was that slick aero would equal SUPERSIZE earnings.
Was suppose to look like this
The sponsor of the car above, Cafe Burgundy in Washington, DC, was owned by Ray Walters, father of Ratus Walters of Maryland who owned the Larry Frank #66, as well as other GN cars.
a cool way to count down the days to the 2014 daytona 500 not to mention the great photos of some of the coolest looking racecars ever built
I totally agree CharlesRay!
R.I.P., H.B.
"Our sport was built by people like H.B. Bailey," said Richard Petty, who raced alongside him for years. "We all did things the same way in those days - we drove ourselves to the race track, we worked hard when we got there, we raced hard and then we drove home. H.B. was a racer through and through, and the sport is better off because he was a part of it. We will miss him."
Yes sir, H.B. was a great guy. We once had the sheet metal from the entire front of one of his cars after a wreck at Darlington. Loaded it on top of the motorhome, tied it down and took it home with his permission. He asked us at the next race what we did with it and we told him it was in my back yard, which it was. What memories.
Definitely one of the best threads we've ever had run here on the site. Great, great photos AND memories.
Here's two #7s that I sponsored, courtesy of RR member, Scott Baker (bakerracingpix.com) -
Derrike Cope - NASCAR Winston West - car owner George Jefferson
Kyle Petty - NASCAR Winston Cup - car owner Glen Wood
ALSO:
Derrike Cope - World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing - New Smyrna - 1985 car owner Dave Fuge
Kyle Petty - NASCAR Winston Cup - car owner Petty Enterprises
Derrike Cope - NASCAR Winston Cup - Richmond - 1984 - Car Owner George Jefferson
dave was that the race that cotton was teaching his driver a lesson
Yes, Charles - it was the race Cotton wanted to show David Pearson how to make smoothe pit stops.
Rare pic. Slick Smith is in the #4
well dave it looks like cotton suceeded in two ways winning the race and teaching his driver a lesson
w Cotton Owens takes the 1964 Capital City 300 on the dirt at Richmond, beating his "regular" driver, David Pearson! UPI photo
The Sept.14,1964 race was supposed to be an day race, rain-delayed the start and the race finished late at night.
Cotton Owens has poor-night vision and won this rain-delayed night race.
There's been all sorts of non-traditional car numbers used around the country at various tracks, especially the local weekly tracks, including dollar mark and cent mark cars. Even cars with fractions have been used. With less than two days to go, but still more than one 'til the 2014 Daytona 500, how about using a little imagination for a car number pairing? RR member, Bill McPeek has submitted a 1-5/8th pairing for our perusal.
The New Jersey photo below, taken at either Wall Stadium or Flemington, shows the nearly obscured Ralph Carlsen #98 sandwiched by car #1 and car #5/8, a 1-5/8th sandwich!
The 1-5/8th sandwich photo is really special to Bill McPeek because he at one time owned another #98 that had been driven by Ralph Carlsen, chauffeur of the middle car above. See the writeup below:
Seem only appropriate with just 1 day left before the 2014 Daytona 500, to honor and recognize RR founder, Jeff Gilder's inspiration for starting RacersReunion - driver, Paul Lewis and his #1.
I totally agree with your logic Dave. Paul is one exceptionally fine man!
Excellent choice and picture Dave. Love those 65 Mopars.
#1/5 Crosley - Eddie Crouse photo #01- #04.
Sept. 1951, Finished 5th. at Royall Speedway NASCAR race.
Oct. 1951, Finished 3rd. at Fairgrounds (R.S.C.R.A.) RICHMOND STOCK CAR RACING ASSOCIATION race. Should have won this race.
