MONTGOMERY 200
Montgomery, Ala. June 25, 1968
The 8th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held in Montgomery Alabama and was 200 laps on the 1/2 mile paved oval. When qualifying was rained out Al Straub got the pole in a random draw. The Tuesday night race began with only 12 cars and became a two car battle between Donnie Allison in a Mustang and Bunkie Blackburn in a Smokey Yunick Camaro. Allison took an early lead until Blackburn went out front on lap 24. The race was red flagged after 82 laps for more than an hour because of heavy rain. When the race resumed Blackburn held the lead until Allison got by on lap 110. The race was stopped on lap 148 for the third shower of the evening. The last segment of the race was under less than ideal conditions as Blackburn had trouble on a slippery track unfamiliar to him while Allison had little difficulty on a track he had been a regular on. This allowed Allison to claim his second Grand Touring win of 1968. The win made it 3 out of 3 for Donnie as he had won the Carolina 500 Grand National race and the Grand Touring race at Richmond. Buck Baker maintained his point lead with a third place finish.
