Today is the anniversary of the September 18, 1965 Capital City 300 race at Richmond. It's the race claimed by the NASCAR Hall of Fame to have been the source of the Richard Petty door possessed by Billy Biscoe. Of course, we proved that theory wrong a number of years ago when I located a photo of LeeRoy Yarbrough hitting the Richmond light pole that supposedly had damaged the door according, erroneously, to Buz McKim.

Anyhow, I remember David Pearson smoking them again on the Richmond dirt 49 years ago tonight in the Cotton Owens #6 Dodge, recently returned after the Chrysler boycott.

Richmond modified stars, Red Foote and Sonny Hutchins both made the GN field. Recently returned Curtis Turner drove a second Junior Johnson entry.

Winner, Pearson's brakes were gone and his throttle was hanging. According to newspaper accounts, Pearson was shoving in the clutch and then throwing the car broadside in the corners.

LeeRoy Yarbrough drove the #43 for Petty at Richmond, since Richard had a previous drag racing commitment. He and Tiny Lund hit the same light pole exiting the muddy Richmond pits. Note the damage to the #43 is to the front end, not the door.

Early in the Richmond race week, the sad news came out of Florence, SC that driver Buren Skeen had succumbed to the injuries he'd received in a Labor Day crash at Darlington:

Ha! The legend of the Petty door. Like a bad virus, that erronous story won't fully go away & keeps coming back.

But we keep trying to quash the NASCAR HOF story, right??!! If we could just get Billy Biscoe to say to them, "Hey Buz, you are WRONG." And, I somehow missed finding your post from one year ago. Sorry. Mea culpa.

DID ANYONE MENTION THAT YOU HAVE TWO DIFFERENT PHOTOS OF TWO DIFFERENT INFIELD LIGHT POLES.
#43 LeeRoy Yarbrough LIGHT POLE WRECK PHOTO LOCATION IS DIFFERENT THAN THE #55 Tiny Lund LIGHT POLE WRECK PHOTO LOCATION.

#43 LeeRoy Yarbrough LIGHT POLE WAS HIT AND KNOCK OVER AT AN ANGLE.
PHOTO LOCATION: THE INFIELD LIGHT POLE AROUND THE 4TH TURN AND FRONT PITS ENTRANCE.

HOW COME #55 Tiny Lund LIGHT POLE IS STRAIGHTER AND HAS IVY VINE RUNNING UP IT ? LOOKS LIKE IT HASN'T BEEN HIT.

#55 Tiny Lund MISSING RACECAR DOOR SECTION LOOK LIKE IT HAS BEEN TAKEN OFF IN THE PITS.

THE UNDAMAGED INFIELD LIGHT POLE. WITH IVY VINE GOING UP IT.

#55 Tiny Lund RACECAR IS COMING OUT OF PITS PASSED THE UNDAMAGED INFIELD LIGHT POLE.
PHOTO LOCATION: THE INFIELD LIGHT POLE AROUND THE FRONT PITS EXIT AND FIRST TURN.

AFTER ENLARGED THE #43 LeeRoy Yarbrough LIGHT POLE WRECK PHOTO.

I NOTICED THE #43 LeeRoy Yarbrough Petty Enterprises '65 Plymouth APPEARED TO BE AN Petty Enterprises '64 Plymouth FRONT END.

I ALSO SOMETHING WRONG WITH PAINTED #43 DRIVER'S DOOR PANEL?
THE PAINTED #43 DRIVER'S DOOR PANEL APPEARS TO HAVE DAMAGED IT'S SIDE AND BOTTOM.

THE BOTTOM OF PAINTED #43 IS DAMAGED.

Thanks for any information or photos posted.

Well, Dennis, your eyes are much sharper than mine! But no damage like the door NASCAR HOF displayed. Is that a driver's side door or a passenger side door, anyway?

DAVE,

I GOT TO GO BACK TO THE AMERICAN PICKERS VIDEO BUT SOMETHING DON'T LOOK RIGHT?

MAYBE MEMORY IS MESSING UP, BUT I THOUGHT I SAW AN DIFFERENT AMERICAN PICKERS #43 DOOR. WITH THE #43 DRIVER'S SIDE WITH DOOR HANDLE/KEY HOLES ON RIGHT SIDE OF #43 DOOR NEXT #3?

DO YOU HAVE ANYMORE PHOTOS OF HALL FAME DOOR?

I ENLARGED YOUR COPY OF HALL OF FAME #43 DOOR AND EXAMINING IT.

I'M ASKING A DUMB QUESTIONS? WHERE THE BEEF? I MEAN WHERE THE #43 DOOR HANDLE/KEY HOLES ON #43 DOOR? LEFT SIDE OR RIGHT SIDE?

#1.IF THE #43 DOOR HAS THE DOOR HANDLE/KEY HOLES ON RIGHT SIDE OF #43 DOOR NEXT #3, THEN IT IS THE #43 DRIVER'S DOOR?

#2.IF THE #43 DOOR HAS THE DOOR HANDLE/KEY HOLES ON LEFT SIDE OF #43 DOOR NEXT #4, THEN IT IS THE #43 PASSAGER'S SIDE DOOR!

NOTE TO ME:
THE ENLARGED COPY OF THE NASCAR HALL OF FAME #43 DOOR LOOKS LIKE IT HAS THE DOOR HANDLE/KEY HOLES ON LEFT SIDE OF #43 DOOR NEXT #4, THEN IT IS THE #43 PASSAGER'S SIDE DOOR!
Thanks for any information or photos posted.

As I'm sure someone has mentioned before, the font is entirely different on that door from what we see in the picture. It appears to be a passenger door to me but I don't expect they would have numbered the sides differently.
