Origins of Figure Eight Racing: Where and When?!!

I was watching Lucas Oil's On The Edge program last night and during the figure eight race the host claimed that the first figure eight track was some place in Indianapolis after WW2. Now I know for a fact that isn't true, because there used to be a figure eight track in Old Orchard Beach, Maine of all places! You can still go there and see it.This track closed down around the START of WW2, so there goes any theories about Indiana having the first figure eight track. Also, I've heard that there was a board track right onthe beachin Old Orchard that they used to race Midgets on in the 30'sbut I've never seen any pictures of it.

By the way, I'm not saying Maine had the first figure eight track, just that we had one prior to WW2 and that people ought to do thier homework before they make claims on the television like they are facts. I guess it fits right into a neat little stereotypical package to say southern moonshine haulers started stock car racing, but the fact is people have been racing cars ever since they started building them in all parts of the Country, including up here.

Yea, I agree, Butch. I'd have to say figure eights date back to the 40's...possibly 30's or even earlier. But I do not know the facts...just that in my travels I have seen pictures of them that were pre-WWII.

Many folks do not know about all the board tracks that existed way back. We have a member here (Jon Clifton) who did a lot of research on them. I don't know if he would have any info on the Maine track, but might.

Great question Butch. I don't put a lot of faith in TV's historical knowledge anymore and I'm glad you don't either. I hope you find out more about the Old Orchard Board track...let us know if you find anything. Those board tracks go back a long way racing bicycles since they really can't race on the old horse tracks because of dirt.
