Before DW & The Gopher There were the NASCUBS & King Richard.... Groan

I, too, have been quick to jump in and blame most of the ills with which NASCAR is currently afflicted on DW and his cartoon gopher, Digger.... but for some reason this morning I remembered those darned NASCUBS . For those of you with short memories, they appeared on the scene circa 1990-1991, courtesy of the NASCAR Marketing Department in Daytona, a bunch of ratty looking college mascot-type bear cubs designed to be the Official Mascots of NASCAR. When those darned bears showed up at our Richmond track, they about scared the kids half to death. I know The Legend will hate to remember this, but NASCAR even talked Richard Petty into using his likeness in the Official NASCUBS Comic Book, Volume #1 in 1991. Future racing historians may decide that this unlikely venture by NASCAR to make another buck is what propelled NASCAR on a long slide from which it may never recover. If "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," then perhaps The King and those long exiled NASCUBS should be flattered by DW and Digger. Please tell me if you see The Legend so I can duck! Please weigh in with opinions and also let me know if you, too, remember those infamous NASCUBS and their adventures with King Richard.

I remember the NASCUBs. I remember the comic book. And as annoying as The NASCUBs were, they can't begin to approach the annoyance level of certain other individuals, real or animated, now around the sport. Of course, I must say that I have recently discovered there are those out there who dislike ME more than I dislike certain others so it all comes out even I suppose.

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

Very short lived, PK. Picture 4 or 5 Lee Corso ESPN Saturday Football type Mascot heads on furry bodies. The kids were literally scared to death. Nobody, but nobody at NASCAR would take credit for the idea. We used to accuse the very affable Mike Calinoff of being the very first CMSLug Nut character and he would never deny it, keeping us all guessing. But that was fun. As Mr. Krul says, NASCUBS were super creepy. I'm sure Richard quickly distanced himself. A lot of folks used to try (and some did) take advantage of Richard and the souvenir business. One,out of Greensboro, who I won't name, had a daughter on the first season of "Survivor." All of the early racetrack "ministers" and "pastors" used to also latch on to Richard. Then, you'd encounter them flying cross country to Riverside first class and soon learn of some scandal that led to their exit from the company of Richard and the racetracks.
