A couple of days ago, Dave Fulton replied to the post about the 1977 Daytona 500. He referenced Tighe Scott and his being from Pen Argyl, PA. That led to Dave posting an article and promo video about the final days of Mitch Zanette, a dye-in-the-wool race fan from Pen Argyl.

The full story that aired on ESPN was tremendous. Well worth the 7 minutes to watch. Its a sad story - yet one that'll have you cheering "Yeah, THAT's the way to do it!"

Absolutely so inspirational to a race fan. Sad, yes, and it did give me a lump in my throat, but when you think of the satisfaction he must have felt, you can only be happy for Mitch. Thanks for sharing the video and thanks, Dave, for bringing up this man in the first place. There is much more to racing than checkered flags and trophies and Mitch is an example of that.

I attended a funeral of Fred Harper a few weeks ago. For those who don't know, Fred was an old time racers from around Augusta, Georgia. I had encountered Fred at each of the Augusta Raceway Preservation Society events I attended. He was always ready to talk racing and I have fond memories of hours of such conversation. When we got to the funeral, Fred's casket was brilliant white with his racing number and a stripe emblazoned on it. There were picture from his racing career all around and most of the floral arrangements contained checkered flags or trophies. Fred's life had been racing. He wanted the world to know that even when he was gone.

You see, folks, that sort of proves the theory that once you are a true race fan, you are always a race fan. Works that way, you know?

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.
