The 1907 automobile race was the first race in Richmond, VA. The forst automobile race in Virginia, however, was in 1904 at a horse track in Norfolk. That race was held after unsuccessful attempts to race on the beach at Virginia Beach, VA.

Brian, could you also put this in the Virginia Racing Heritage page that Jeff Gilder has set up? Great piece of history. Do you have a list of the drivers/manufacturers who were there? I'd love to see the list and where they were from. As a side note, I listened to the announcers during the MIS race talk about the car "Sweepstakes" that ran in Grosse Pointe, Michigan in 1901. The restored car was on display at the speedway and they were so far off base about the race I just laughed! Thanks Brian.Pete in Michigan
