NASCAR National Short Track Series

Stock Car Racing History

That's the race, Chase (although the Lincoln anniversary program says it was on July 1). Never thought about this division being the predecessor of GN North/K&N. The 1960 race and the two in '62 no doubt were part of the series as well. I'll have to see if I can find some clips about those, too. BTW, Lincoln is an awesome place to watch racing today. When I went there for the first time in 1986, there was a wooden billboard sign from the 1965 GN race in the rafters overhead in the men's room. Wish I knew what became of it.

NASCAR National Short Track Series

Stock Car Racing History

I'm looking at a copy of the 50th anniversary program book for Lincoln Speedway (New Oxford, Pa.), published in 2002. It includes information about all of the various Grand National (Cup) races held there between 1955 and 1965, plus a Convertible race, a Grand National East race (incorrectly called Grand American) and a USAC stock event, but it also includes four "non-point Grand National races," also identified as "National Short Track Series" races, "actually a separate series." These 150- and 100-lap races were held in 1960, '61 and '62, and they were won by Elmo Langley (twice), Richard Petty and Jim Paschal. The top five is given for each. Can anybody provide more info about this "series," which was after the old NASCAR Short Track Division was disbanded in 1959. I' d never heard anything about it. I started following NASCAR in 1963, and I'm pretty sure there were none of these events then.

Racing the way it should be --- memories

Stock Car Racing History

Happier postscript: Lincoln Speedway (New Oxford, Pa.) was rained out Saturday but ran Sunday. Maybe the extra day helped: Jacob finished fifth & Logan was ninth.

Racing the way it should be --- memories

Stock Car Racing History

Here's a story from last Friday night (Oct. 7), guys. Williams Grove Speedway (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) has its rescheduled National Open World of Outlaws race coming up this Friday (rescheduled from two weeks ago due to rain), and several teams used this past weekend's feature as a tune-up, including Shark. Unfortunately, both cars had engine problems in warm-ups. Jacob was done, but they didn't give up on Logan's car. Out he went for his heat, then back to the pits with more problems. Out he went for the consi, then, after running away with the race for four laps, bam; there was more smoke and flame. Fortunately, they still had qualified for the last starting position before everything went south. Nobody thought they'd make it out, but they did, and once the race started, Logan was on fire - up five spots in three laps, then into the top 10. Hot rods like Lance Dewease, Lucas Wolfe and Brent Marks fell to the #1s, then Logan shot past Brian Montieth into fifth place with four laps to go. Then . . . well, then, Montieth went back around Schuchart, and we all saw the 1s begin to slow. For nearly two laps, Logan fought it, but on the white flag lap, he had to pull in. A possible top five or better became 15th place, but Logan had given a good turnout of fans the show of the night (the race otherwise wasn't that great). I know Shark needed the money, but they won a purse full of fans instead.

NASCAR SUED FOR 500 MILLION DOLLARS.

Current NASCAR

No problem. When one of us gets in the other's neighborhood one day, we'll talk about political correctness and greater societal issues - after we've solved the issues of the racing world.

Tim, I take part in these discussions because of a love of racing, not a desire to hash out politics, but I need to say this. If a klansman who happened to be a Republican did something truly outrageous, you would take justifiable offense at someone blaming all Republicans, all conservatives, or anyone who was closer in any political way to the offender than the accuser. You would object to slamming all Republicans/conservatives unconditionally when they had nothing to do with the outrageous act. Maybe that should work both ways. If we can't conduct civil discourse without rendering everyone who doesn't march in lock-step with our beliefs worthless and evil, then we're turning our backs on the process that made this nation great. Let's call this lawsuit what it is: a cheap stunt by an opportunist. However, that half of the American electorate that doesn't necessarily agree with you on other issues had nothing to do with this and should be left out of the discussion.

Good luck, Bill. As I said earlier, it's a beautiful car and would look awesome on the track.

Woody and everyone else: Here's some additional information about this car. EMMR doesn't have a lot of specifics, but Bill Smith, an AACA/Hershey director, was involved with the restoration and should be able to provide lots of additional detail. The car apparently was a 6-cylinder racer in New York state originally, but after its restoration - including the switch to V8 power - it was raced once in a vintage event at the former Penn National Speedway (the auto racing track once on the grounds of the horse racing track (and now casino) at Grantville, Pa.) and certified by AACA as such. As noted elsewhere, it was further restored and shown two years ago at Hershey. It will be at Hershey for the annual fall meet in two weeks, and raffle tickets will be available.

This is Frank. While I don't have additional info on this car (other than a layperson's admiration, having seen it in person several times), I'll be at EMMR this Sunday for a meeting & will see what I can find out. I'll also add a plug for the Latimore Valley Fair in late June & the EMMR convention in August, when dozens of classic sprints, midgets, modifieds and stockers take to the restored 1930s Latimore Valley track for 35-40 mph laps. If you love old race cars, one of these weekends is worth the trip.

CRICKETS, BULLFROGS AND RUMBLING ENGINES

Stock Car Racing History

You never know, Tim. I've been trying to get to the Hillsborough track reunion in early October, and while prospects don't look so good at the moment, something like that could happen one day.
