Earnhardt Senior Had a Female Daytona 500 Teammate in 1980

General

Lost for me in this trivia is that I WAS THERE. My 1st Daytona as a young teen. Watched it from atop a camper in the infield - one that belonged to my uncle's father-in-law. Was so cold that day. But I didn't waver from up top. My uncles retired to inside the warm confines of the camper where they then warmed themselves a bit with some sour mash from Lynchburg, TN.

  • I remember them bringing us in from the backside of the track - turn 2 I think - to head us towards our parking spot.
  • I remember the stiff winds and cold temps of the day.
  • I remember buying my program, t-shirt, and track patch (the program and patch I still have).
  • I remember Buddy Baker finally nabbing his one and only 500.
  • I remember the disappointment of the King not going the distance after having won it the year before.
  • I remember seeing a roadster car shaped like a Busch beer can.
  • I remember hot tubs brought to the track - with race honeys in them.
  • I remember my eyes drifting from the race at stare like a stupid teenage boy at those honeys.

But honestly, I have zero recollection of Janet being in the race.

Now THAT"s some quality trivia. If given the opportunity to rattle off Dale Sr's career teammates, many may get Mike Skinner .. perhaps Neil Bonnett at Talladega ... and maybe even Dave Marcis in the beginning. But I bet you could lift a Jackson from someone easily with Janet Guthrie as answer.

No Bones About It - Daytona is Reaching

Wait. If you call within the next 15 minutes, you'll get this added bonus FREE!

Mitt Romney to make appearance at Daytona 500. I guess he'll be appearing as the Nominee Honoree.

http://www.news-journalonline.com/breakingnews/2012/02/romney-delay...

Romney's campaign planned to be in town Friday for a fundraising reception hosted by International Speedway Corp. CEO Lesa France Kennedy, but Tuesday's primary in Michigan -- where Romney's father was a three-term governor in the 1960s -- is too close for him to get away. Polls show a surprisingly tough race between Romney -- who won Michigan four years ago against John McCain -- and Rick Santorum.

"They're going to reschedule it because he's so hard-pressed in Michigan," said Don Kane, a volunteer in the local campaign effort.

Instead of a fundraiser, Romney will come for a quick visit Sunday on the morning of the 500, Kane said. Speedway officials said formal plans weren't in place yet.

As purely honorary positions, I honestly can't say we'd act most honorably. But on my honor, I'll pledge to pay a nominal honorarium if we don't act honorably (but only if we get caught).

I'll second that nomination. And I'll submit a new nomination for me: Honorary Shotgun Plymouth Rider with The Most Honorable Tim Leeming who shall serve as the Honorary Legend.

pawn stars and goodyear tire

Maybe its just me looking backwards as an (aging) adult vs. looking forward as a younger person who likes chasing celebrity - but the idea of autographs is really overblown in my opinion. Less than a handful of drivers are even willing to take the time anymore to give you something that's legible or act like they even care.

The more I've cruised ebay lately, the more I laugh at folks trying to sell Richard Petty autographed stuff at ridiculous prices. Hopefully no one is buying it. The fact that Richard ALWAYS signs (and legibly) means there is no shortage of stuff autographed by him. An over-abundance. Too much supply. In a secondary market, those items should not be worth more than a non-autographed items. If anything, maybe less. BUT ... if you are a fan and have been fortunate enough to get YOUR item, photo, shirt, arm, etc. signed by him, then to me the autograph is priceless.

February 17, 1971: The King scores another Daytona 500 crown

Stock Car Racing History

Good fortune fell to Richard Petty's way in the 1974 Daytona 500. He cut a tire near the entrance to pit road & was able to drop down immediately. Donnie Allison also cut a tire but did so in the tri-oval - perhaps the worst possible place to have a tire issue. That was pretty much the difference as the King nabbed his 5th Daytona 500 win.

More details, pics, and video here:

And speaking of Slaid Cleaves, here is another one of his that resonates with me: Horseshoe Lounge. He wrote it about a bar in Texas. But I've always related it to a little hole-in-the wall in Johnson City TN - not too far from Bristol. For a long time, it was Casey's Horseshoe Lounge and later it became McCreary's HSL. They billed themselves as having the "best damn burgers in Johnson City". The place was a race-themed bar with all the booths named after a different driver and memorabilia of the driver on the wall above the booth. Many memorable stories came from our visits to the Horseshoe in the early 90s.

The song has a line that references peeling the labels off a Miller Lite. One time when a bud and I were there, we decided to have some fun with the waitress. We ordered two Miller High Lifes. But we told her we were mad at Miller for having dropped Bobby Allison after his career-ending Pocono wreck & didn't want to be seen supporting them. We asked her to bring us 2 nekkid Miller bottles. It seemed to take a while for her to return. But then we laughed as we looked towards the bar. She was using a table knife to scrape the labels off the 2 bottles. Yes - we tipped her generously.
