Drag Racing History
Thanks Johnny on your story of this wild & crazy guy. I met him at Aquasco Speedway back in the early '60's.
I was working the starting line when he was booked in at the track. I was lining up the cars for eliminations. Here he comes up with the Chevy V-8 powered cycle. I looked at him and thought he was just a crew member. He looked like a college professor. He climbs on that bike with the rear wheel off the strip, rev's it up, goes forward with his body and off he went. Everyone was startled as I was. Man, he had nerves of steel.
The passing of "Art Malone"

One of thevery few racers that raced stock cars, Indy cars and drag raced. Also a race promoter. Great racer, great guy and a great friend. R.I.P. "Colonel"!
Back in the mid-60's Richmond Dragway had a big race every Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day. On a sad note, Paul "Mongoose" Garlinski was killed later in a street accident in Maryland. I spend a few hours in his dad's famous "Night Clubs" in D.C. However the Bob Banning Drag Race Team of Dave Reitz & Tom Sneden are still racing. Thanks for the memories Woody.
I always had a laugh there when Owner-Promoter Dan Weis did the announcing and his mis-pronouncing the racers names.
On a side note, I helped with the formation of the the best Drag Racing Magazine EVER, Super Stock & Drag Illustrated Magazine. It was a shame to see it end as well as Eastern Drag News and Drag Times.
