Wood Brothers' Shops Through the Years - Happy 88th Birthday Glen Wood

Stock Car Racing History

Eddie & Len have done a great job keeping history alive in the new shop. Equipment from the old shop has been saved and lined up on the walls just as it was in the old block building and the walls in the new shop have dozens of old photos blown up on large canvas that depict the history of the family racing days. Very much enjoyed seeing everyone there yesterday. It was a day I will remember for a long time. Not very often you get folks like Glen, Leonard, DeLano and Ray Lee and their families together along with David Pearson, Rex White, Harold Smith, Hank Thomas and many more legends in the same room. Great times and some great memories.

Talked to Buz yesterday at Glen's birthday party. He said he thought we could get a group "old fart" discount if I contact him. As the date gets closer, I will contact him again for details.

I didn't think it would take long to raise a little interest. Looking forward to it. Looks like it will be a full moon on the 21st or 22nd. If going to the HOF and racing are anywhere near the same, that should make it interesting. LOL! Those would be some good dates to start with. You guys pick one.

Probably a week day would be better. Lets look for some time in late August. I'll see if I can get Chocolate involved in some way. I'll have to check on what days he does the radio show. Looks like we have a couple of takers already. Be great to get 8 - 10 together. Maybe a couple more. We can have dinner at the Buffalo Wild Wings on site. OK gang. The invitation is out. Who is interested?

I get a laugh out of thinking about the hundreds of articles in the media during the days when NASCAR attempted to re-write history by "expanding" from a regional sport in the southeast into a "national" sport. Many of those tracks mentioned in your story were fixtures on the GN schedules in the 50's. The attached photo of daddy and what is left of Mr. Westmorelands Plymouth was taken in Detroit, MI. I guess the track could have been in southeasrern Detroit. Note the license plate on the rear of the little Plymouth. Wonder if they drove it up there and how they got it home ?

No Tim. That was from Floyd Speedway. "Pops" Turner was the promoter of the event and mother always told me he had bought a "big" trophy because he was sure he was going to take home the hardware as well. The article I have from the race says he led a bunch but wasn't around for the finish and that trophy is on my wall as well. Glad I can contribute. I appreciate what you guys do.
