HELP - History/photos of former Fireball Roberts short track / Modified Sportsman 57 Ford

General

Creating "history" seems to be common in this area. Witness the comments from Mr. Ball on the 37"flatback" he purchased. BTW! Thanks to Billy Biscoe for the history lesson on my brothers old GN Monte Carlo and for keeping the "history" alive in his cars.

git rid of the chase

Current NASCAR

Like it or not, the "Chase" is probably here to stay. With that said and with the thought process being to keep a battle for the championship alive, I wonder if they have given any thought to the way points are awarded in the "combination" races in the Whelen Modified events? In that series the north and south cars receive points based on their finishes in relation to the other cars in their division. At Bristol, James Civali was credited with a win in the south with a third place finish. Burt Myers was credited with second in the south even though he finished 11th overall. Civali only gained 10 points on Myers. If that formula was applied, Kenseth would still be in 12th but only 96 points back instead of 136 under the current plan. Stewart only 90 back in 10th and Harvick and Boyer would be tied for second. I don't particuarly like either plan over the old system but it some excitement for the 13th spot would make sense to award points based on the guys you are actually racing against for the title. Same for the 13th place bonus. McMurray-190, Jr.-170,Reutimann, 165, etc. That would even create some excitement for that spot.

I think you are correct on this. The "Home State 200" was the final dirt track event for the Grand National division on the NC State Fairgrounds track.

Legends Million Division Qualifying

General

Daniel Hemric and Brian Sockwell Big Winners in Legends Million at Charlotte Motor SpeedwayKannapolis, N.C., native Daniel Hemric won the inaugural Legends Million, the largest grassroots race in history, at Charlotte Motor Speedway, taking home an unprecedented $250,000 with the victory.Leading the first 89 laps of the 100-lap A-Feature, it looked as if pole-sitter Doug Stevens was going to complete a perfect weekend by winning the Legends Million. Stevens was the fastest qualifier on Thursday, then led all 20 laps of his Friday heat race, securing the pole for Saturdays main event.Stevens was able to keep a hard-charging Hemric at bay for 51 laps by staying on the bottom of the race track, but with pressure from Hemric, Stevens car slid up the track going into Turn 1 on Lap 89. That small miscue was all Hemric needed to take over the lead with just 11 laps to go. Stevens wasnt ready to give up, riding Hemrics bumper for next few laps, before Hemrics machine pulled away by several car lengths.Stevens held on to finish second, followed by Steven Cantrell, David Ragan and Tyler Green.Hemric knew he had to be in the right place at the right time to make the move for the win.I knew the car was good enough to run with the best of them out there, Hemric said. He finally made a mistake. I didnt expect him to. He never does. But he made that one little mistake and thats all I needed.I wasnt going to drive into him, Hemric continued. I tried to respect him and he definitely respected me. When he made that mistake it just opened the door. The car was just so good I was able to pull away.Hemric didnt have immediate plans for the $250,000 he earned with the victory.Im just glad I was able to bring home the win for the locals and glad to keep the money here in Charlotte, he said.Brian Sockwell, of Brown Summit, N.C., took home the victory in the Masters division A-Main with a dominating performance, leading 44 laps of the 50-lap event. Starting in the 11th position, Sockwell quickly made his way through the field, taking over the point position on the sixth lap. Sockwell never looked back, lapping the majority of field en route to his $30,000-to-win victory.
