Inspired by Johnny Mallonee, My NC Backroads Journey Unearthed a Petty Family Remembrance

General

Dave, The courthouse in Pittsboro caught fire a year or so ago. Only the brick walls survived. It is being rebuilt. You would have past right by my house a few miles after you left Siler City. Buffalo Ranch is gone now too. A lot of 49 has been 4 laned. Haven't been to Carthage in a while, ate at the airport restaurant and I haven't seen the Petty sign. Used to go through Carthage on the way to Rockingham Speedway. There is no road side marker but you past a ghost track when you went through Biscoe.

The Original 1-Time Only 1980 Championship Earnhardt/Osterlund Wrangler Jeans Machine at Ontario

Stock Car Racing History

One of the best remarks I've heard about "cheatin" was when Richie Bartz was asked if it was fun working in that grey area back in the day. His reply spoke volumes, "The most fun was betting them when it wasn't your turn."

how not to enjoy the start of a race

General

Wow Johnny, that was a wild ride. The car did not turn over but it made me think about the time in '67 at Sanford Motor Speedway in Sanford,NC. when dad started on the front row. With that 396 he pulled the other cars when the green flag dropped but broke a axle just past the flag stand. The car turn sideways in front of the whole field. Dad said he thinks every car on the track hit him by the time he stopped inside turn one. Took several weeks to get it back together.

Rule change

Trivia

Thanks Jim, You know more than the one asking the question. The pipes having to come out the side was what I was looking for. All these other details make iteven more interesting. That is one of the really cool things about this site, there is always someone to learn from. I had read an article from Feb. '70 that told of the rule change but did not give the date of the change. I assumed it was new for the Daytona 500 that year, now you know what that makes me don't you, LOL.

Rule change

Trivia

When LeeRoy Yarbrough returned to Daytona in 1970 he was going for 3 in row and was in the news for causing NASCAR to make a rule change. He had won both GN races at the speedway in 1969 in the Herb Nab prepared Ford Talladega #98. There was something a little different about the car in the '69 Firecracker 400 and in '70 Big Bill made sure it was like everyone else.

What was it that cuased the rule change?

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Eric, The guy in the red jacket is my brother Keith. The man in the dark jacket to Keith's right is my father Wayne who ran at the old Bennett Speedway.

Thanks Robert. You can really see the original shape of the track. Confirms what I saw on the ground last year. 3 and 4 are almost mirror images of one another with #1 being a little larger radius and #2 even a larger radius unwinding onto the back stretch. I even see the grandstand, the road that led to the infield that went around the outside of 3 &4 and down the back stretch, and the fence outside of that.

This ground level picture is from a year and a half ago from outside of turn 3. You can look across and see the earth bank that was the front stretch wall that kept the cars out of the grandstand.

From this view outside the back stretch you can see what is left of the banking in turn 1.

View from top of the banking at exit of turn 1. I can just see those old jalopies charging toward me into one.

Jim Rumley, this could have been the car Jim raced at Bennett Speedway. Pops Rumley said Jim sent this picture to his mother after it was taken at a race in Georgia.
