November 4, 1979: The Dixie 500

Stock Car Racing History

This was the outcome of Lake's qualifying effort. If I remember right, this was his first attempt in a stock car. I know just three months earlier I was his one-man crew at a Bridgestone Pro Kart race in Quincy, IL. I always thought it was odd that the reigning World Champion (at the time) was running a big $$ kart race with no help. Although when he won the World Champs he had no crew, just one mechanic.

He tried again at Ontario and missed the field by just hundredths then ran the West race at Phoenix. His next start was the 1980 ARCA 200 at Daytona where he qualified 5th and finished 2nd.

Stock Car Racing History

I decided to scan some of the photos from the SCR race coverage.

David took exception to the speed at which Richard entered pit road and showed his displeasure by turning the43. Maurice went to the Pearson pit and had to be removed by Richard.

Jim Clark managed to avoid this mess. James Hylton suffered his first injury as a driver in this crash.

Looks like Leonard on the right front has put a whoopin on who ever was changing the right rear.

Jochen Rindt checks out Jim Clark in the seat of the number 66 Ford.

Maybe Clark is explaining to Rindt what to do with your eyes as you enter turn one at the Rock.

Dick Hutcherson makes a pit stop in his final career start in the Bondy Long #29 Ford.

Saddened to read the race report in this issue of SCR only had two sentences total about the foreign invasion of Clark, Rindt, and Scarfiotti.

Not from SCR but from "Auto Racing" magazine. They had a race story and a side story on Clark. Being a big Clark fan I scanned these a few years ago.

Really sad that this track was lost due to a political battle. Pretty short-sighted on someone's part.

This link to Historic Aerials still shows the track existed for the most part in 1965. You can use the compare feature to see what's there today.

This is an old topic by now but I recently located another photo from this race. Bolander, Bowsher, Waltrip, and McCluskey.

Here are a couple of photos of that Andrews guy.

In this one he's leading Bobby Unser off turn 4.

Here he runs in a pack behind Bay Darnell and leading Terry Ryan and John Reimer. Don't understand why Butch Hartman's car is sitting in the pits looking like a dnf when he finished 6th. I guess the photo could have been taken during practice.

That is a good follow up on Al. If I ever knew what happened I forgot, but I knew he was here because of this photo of the car on the hauler. Wondered why he didn't show up in the race results.

And he was even introduced during driver introductions. Shown here being greeted by Metro Nashville Mayor Beverly Briley. Nowadays if someone wasn't going to start the race they'd be out of the track and on the private jet home before the crew got the car loaded.
