Tom Hessert; Ken Schrader Racing Prepared To Keep Momentum Train Rolling At Mobile

MOBILE, Alabama Off to his best start in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards in nearly three years, Tom Hessert III, often known in the garage as TH3 heads to Mobile (Ala.) International Speedway vying to build on his teams top-10 performance at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway last month. Hessert, driving the No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet for legendary Motorsports figure Ken Schrader knocked out a 10th place finish in the season-opening ARCA event at Daytona but now the Cherry Hill, New Jersey native admits that real start of the season can officially begin with Saturday afternoons Mobile ARCA 200.

In a way, Im glad that Daytona is over with, because were going back racing where a lot of the elements that a team can handle come into play, offered Hessert. Believe me, we are thankful to go to a place like Daytona but its nice to move on and head to a track like Mobile where I feel the show is going to be spectacular.

Hesserts thoughts on Saturdays second race of the season have justification. Last week, the Ken Schrader Racing (KSR) team led by veteran crew chief Donnie Richeson participated in a private test session at the half-mile oval where the team left the Southern Alabama racetrack with confidence. The test went real well, sounded the 25-year old. As a team, we felt it was important to go and test because we knew that this race would have some big players. Cale (Gale), Bubba (Pollard) and Chase (Elliott) this is their stomping grounds, so we went to test to see if we cant get us an early weekend advantage. From the test, the guys took our No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet back to the shop and made some tweaks, so I think well be in good shape when practice begins on Friday afternoon. The former NASCAR Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car driver wasnt afraid to talk about what type of race everyone can expect on Saturday afternoon. I think its going to be one of the best shows of the season, honestly, the ARCA veteran said. The track is incredibly unique but very fast, so those two elements alone together usually means the grandstands will be packed. Its a good thing too because its a great thing for the ARCA Racing Series to be heading to a new short track venue.

If youre also keeping track, its fair to note that Hessert and his KSR team really showed immense strength in there short track, especially in last Octobers season finale at Toledo Speedway where Hessert bolted to second career Menards pole, led a ton of laps and finished inside the top-five. I think one of our strongest suites as a team last year was on the short tracks and that focus continues for 2012, Hessert offered. Were not bringing the same car we took to Toledo Speedway last fall, but were extremely confident in the chassis that we are bringing to Mobile this weekend. Its a piece that we ran at a lot of the smaller tracks last year and there isnt a question in my mind that with its capabilities and the calls from the KSR team, well be in the hunt for the win on Saturday afternoon.
While the chase for the ARCA championship marches on this weekend, Hessert who currently occupies 11th in the championship standings, just a mere five points from climbing into the top-10, TH3 knows that another good showing this weekend can catapult the Federated Auto Parts Racing team easily into the top-five.

I know a lot of the guys that went to Daytona arent showing up in Mobile, so thats our gain. But, in order to make that leap in the points, we have to keep the fenders on our No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet to the checkered flag. Thats exactly what I plan to do. Entering Mobile, Hessert has 84 career ARCA Racing Series starts. In those
outings, he has maneuvered two poles, one win, 19 top-fives and 44 top-10s.

The Mobile ARCA 200 (200 laps / 100 miles) is the second of 20 events on the 2012 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. The first ARCA race held at MIS is a two-day show. Practice begins Friday, March 9 with a three and a half hour practice session planned from 1:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell is set for later in the day at 7:00 p.m. An on-track autograph session has been etched in on race day, Saturday, March 10 from 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. The event will take the green flag shortly after 2:00 p.m. The race will not be televised on SPEED but additional race coverage including live timing and scoring will be available through the ARCA Racing Network (ARN) online at arcaracing.com . All times are local.

Wimbish Inches His Way To Victory Lane

Newton, N.C. -- Josh Wimbish inches ahead of Austin McDaniel to win the Late Model Spring Fling Season Opener.

For immediate release

NEWTON, N.C (March 10, 2012) Hickory Motor Speedway opened the gates Saturday night for the Spring Fling Season Opener, officially starting the tracks 61st season of stock car racing. After starting the race from the pole position, Josh Wimbish, driver of the No. 57 late model, battled the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel to the bitter end to capture his first win of the 2012 season during the 100-lap Bojangles Late Model feature.

Josh Wimbish, No. 51, led the field to the green flag for the caution filled, Bojangles Late Model 100-lap feature event. Just as soon as the field gained full speed, it was slowed after the No. 43 of Jesse LeFevers, reigning Hickory Motor Speedway Track Champion, experienced mechanical issues causing his car to stall on the backstretch.

As green-flag racing resumed, Wimbish continued to lead the field, but the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel stayed close his bumper looking for the opportunity to move out front. The two began to pull away from the field when the second caution fell on lap 23 after the No. 4 of Mackena Bell went for a spin in turn four.

Back under green-flag conditions, McDaniel pulled ahead of Wimbish taking over the lead. With McDaniel out front, cautions continued to fall when the No. 11 of Matt Piercy spun coming out of turn four on lap 48 and 51. The fifth caution soon followed after the No. 9 of Ben Rhodes went for a spin heading into turn one on lap 57.

The No. 1 of Pietro Fittipalidi was the reason behind the sixth caution of the feature after experiencing mechanical issues, coming to a stop on the backstretch. On lap 76, the No. 16 of Clint Fields and No. 57 of Grant Wimbish connected heading into turn two bringing out the yellow flag for a seventh time. The eighth caution waved following the restart, when track officials called an improper restart. The ninth caution of the night came on lap 78 when the No. 19 of Kyle Moon spun on the backstretch. The No. 2 of Trey Gibson brought out the tenth and final caution on lap 85 after experiencing mechanical issues that caused his car to stall on the track.

All of the cautions didnt work in the favor of McDaniel who managed to maintain his lead until the final yellow flag. As the field returned to green-flag conditions Wimbish began to put pressure on McDaniel in efforts to regain the lead. During the final 15 laps, the two battled door-to-door taking turns running in the top position. As the laps wound down, Wimbish powered ahead of McDaniel, crossing the finish line by mere feet. After a solid run, McDaniel settled for second, while the No. 04 of Dillon Bassett finished third, Rhodes fourth and Bell fifth.

21 cars hit the track for the Paramount KIA Limited Late Model 35-lap feature, with the No. 9 of Charlie Watson leading the pack to the green flag. Just as the field got up to full speed, the No. 51 of Jeremy Pelfry put pressure on Watson for the lead. The two battled side-by-side until lap eight when the first caution fell after the No. 12 of Annabeth Barnes spun into the outside wall of turn four.

As green-flag racing resumed, Watson and Pelfry continued to battle for the lead. The field began to spread out on the track until the No. 72 of Jason Cochran spun around in turn three bringing out the second caution of the race.

Back under green-flag conditions, the field sailed around the track until lap 22 when Pelfry and Watson connected headed into turn three sending Watson into the outside wall, leaving track officials to bring out the yellow flag for a third time.

Pelfry brought the field to the green flag with 13 laps remaining. Just as the field came up to full speed, a wreck broke out on the front stretch collecting several cars in the back of the pack bringing out the fourth caution of the race and first red flag.

Pelfry led the field back to the green flag, but his lead didnt last long as the No. 21 of Monty Cox quickly took over the top spot and began to pull away from the field. With less than 10 laps remaining the No. 15 of Brandon Atkinson moved into the second position leaving Pelfry to ride around third. As the laps came to an end Cox was the first to cross the finish line grabbing his first win of the season. Atkinson came home second and Pelfry third. The No. 00 of Shane Lee and the No. 75 of Landon Huffman rounded out the top five.

The No. 99 of Roy Smith brought the WrenchRags Street Stocks to the green flag for the divisions 30-lap feature. Smiths lead didnt last long as the No. 03 of Kevin Eby quickly passed the pole sitter taking over the lead on lap two. Eby and Smith continued to battle for the top position throughout the duration of the race. Smith used lap traffic to close the gap between he and Eby, but Eby powered ahead grabbing the win during the caution free event. Smith finished second. The No. 92 of Jason Stanley, the No. 64 of Marshall Sutton and the No. 5 of Mike Newton finished third through fifth respectively.

The Super Trucks brought the 2012 Spring Fling Season Opener to a close with their 35-lap race. The No. 72 of Jason Cochran started the race from the pole position and found his way to victory lane, after the No. 33 of Jeremy Birch led the most laps. Birch finished second, followed by the No. 94 of Brad Cox, the No. 29 of Ricky Dennie and the No. 11 of Thomas Beane to round out the top five.

Dont miss the action next Saturday, March 17th as the UARA-Stars invade Hickory Motor Speedway. The event will feature the Carolina Vintage Cars, Renegades and a 150-lap feature for the cars of the UARA-Stars. Grandstands open at 4:30 PM, with qualifying at 5 PM and racing action at 7 PM. Falk returns to Victory Lane at SoBo with dominating Danville Toyota 300 win

Local and Regional Short Track Racing

While C.E. Falk III was being showered with praise by his fellow drivers after last Octobers season finale at South Boston Speedway, he still knew he could have easily won and been the driver celebrating in Victory Lane.

Coming off of Turn 4 on Lap 300 to the checkered flag Saturday, Falks fist pump out of the car signified that he was finally heading back to Victory Lane at SoBo.

Falk, the three-time defending Langley Speedway track champion, led the final 110 laps and pulled away to win the Danville Toyota 300 and the $10,000 check that comes with winning the first leg of the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown Series.

It feels incredible. Its up there with the Denny Hamlin [Short Track Showdown] win, our first Hampton Heat and our first track championship, Falk said. This was a huge win for us. Man, we built this new car and had Sammy [Houston, crew chief] come on board and man, hes absolutely great. Hes made me a better driver and a better mechanic. Im really pumped about the season. This is so cool.

The victory is vindication for Falk, who has not won at the 0.4-mile oval since 2009 and had come close to victory countless times during the two-year stretch, despite several of the top Late Model stars not being in the 22-car field.

Falk, who has provided plenty of star power over the past three years, was able to get back by pole sitter Nick Smith on Lap 191 and never looked back as the second half of the race only had one brief caution on Lap 182 for a three-car wreck in Turn 1.

Falk led three times for a race-high 154 laps and is the clubhouse leader in the Triple Crown standings, which resumes July 28 with the Hampton Heat at Langley. The 24-year-old Virginia Beach native has won the past two Hampton Heats, which also pays $10,000 to win.

Youve just got to be prepared. All these guys, theyre going to work hard and theyre really tough competitors, Falk said. We had a good car today and the second half just really fell our way. I feel really confident going to Langley; weve got a great car. Im really confident we can go to these races up here in South Boston and continue to win.

Smith, the dominant car during the first 154 laps, finished second ahead of the hard-charging Eddie Johnson. Johnson was as far back as 14th with 80 laps to go before slicing and dicing his way through the field.

Its kind of frustrating to finish second the longer I think about it, but overall, it was a great day for the team, Smith said. For me, Im kind of frustrated because I want to be in Victory Lane, but I cant say enough about the guys. They worked their butts off. The car drove really well and they got the setup dialed in right off the bat; we didnt get hardly any practice for that to be like that. I think we did great.

Falk, Smith and Johnson have all had success at Langley, a 0.395-mile flat oval, and figure to now be the favorites to add to their Triple Crown totals.

When they first come out with the Triple Crown, I looked at it and said, Well, I might not have the car or the money that other people have and win it, but second and third sure looks good and thats some decent bonus money for you at the end of the year, Johnson said. Well surely be looking forward to it. The main thing is to be able to go down to Langley, be able to finish that race and then the third thing is qualify for Martinsville. Thats probably the toughest of the whole Triple Crown deal.

Matt Bowling and Dennis Holdren finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Bowling was among three drivers Falk and Smith included who broke away from the field for the better part of the final 140 laps as the 22-car field was quickly spaced out.

Michael Hardin, who showed up early Saturday morning to race, finished sixth. Peyton Sellers, who led twice for 25 laps, finished seventh as nine cars finished on the lead lap.

Without stars Philip Morris and Lee Pulliam as the showcase attraction, which had become commonplace the past two seasons, Falk shined during this 300-lap event.

Its cool, especially now that they renamed it Philips Victory Lane and I get to be the first one in it, Falk said, referring to the speedway naming Victory Lane after Philip Morris, who has won the most Late Model races at the track. Thats really cool. I dont know, any win up here is tough. To get this 300-lapper and a big check to start the year, its huge. Its really cool.

The inaugural Real Deal at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, N.C. March 30-31 will salute USAC veteran Shane Hmiel, of Pleasant Garden, N.C. The two consecutive nights of racing on the 4/10-mile paved oval feature the USAC Mopar National Midgets and USAC Midwest/Eastern Ford Focuses.

Hmiel set a new Worlds Sprint Car qualifying record of 146.444 mph at Iowa Speedway in 2010 before suffering injuries in a Silver Crown crash later that year. He has five career USAC Sprint wins, but also has a Silver Crown and a Midget win. The Midget win as a driver came in March of 2010 at Hickory. N.C., USACs last National appearance in the Tarheel State, and he returned to victory lane as a car owner last October with Levi Jones winning at Pontoon Beach, Ill. In 2010 Shane was one of only four drivers to win races in all three USAC National racing series.

This is a real honor for me, says Shane. USAC and its people have been great to me. Im excited that they are coming back to my home state and I think Ace is a perfect track for the Midgets. The racing should be great.

Two racing sons have accounted for all six feature victories in USACs previous appearances at Ace Speedway. Jarett Andretti, Johns son, won four Focus features there last year, while Ernie Irvans son Jared won a pair of Focus races last October.

Bryan Clauson will be aiming at a third consecutive USAC Mopar National Midget driving title. Hell compete for the Columbus, Ind. Keith Kunz Motorsports team with Toyota power in a year which hopefully will include his Indianapolis 500 debut.

USAC Traxxas Silver Crown and AMSOIL National Sprint Champ Levi Jones will pilot Hmiels Three Wide Life Midget as he seeks the final leg of USACs Triple Crown Championship.

Darren Hagen, who earned a USAC Sprint win February 11 at Ocala, Fla., has been USACs Pavement Midget Champ the past two years and is also a major threat in 2012.

Pavement specialists Bobby Santos III and Mario Clouser will also be ones to watch as they team for RW Motorsports and Levi Roberts will compete full-time for Bryan Clauson/Corey Tucker Racing, the 2010 and 2011 National Car Owners Champion.

The 2012 USAC Midwest and Eastern Ford Focuses complement the Midgets in the back-to-back doubleheaders. A practice session is slated for both series at Ace Speedway on Thursday, March 29, from 3-7 pm.

Bubba Pollard and Augie Grill Win Rattler Races at South Alabama Speedway

Local and Regional Short Track Racing

Veteran short-track specialists Bubba Pollard and Augie Grill left with the titles and the trophies of the Rattler Weekends premier races, but 14-year-old Kyle Benjamin could make a case that he had the best car in both the Rattler 250 and the Rattler 100.

Bubba Pollard and Augie Grill Win Rattler Races at South Alabama Speedway

The double feature, forced when rain washed out the first two days of the season-opening weekend at South Alabama Speedway, started in bright sunshine and ended under the lights on a windy, cool Sunday at the 4/10th-mile asphalt track.

Pollard won the grueling Rattler 250 which was red-flagged twice and slowed further by eight cautions in the first 100 laps by several seconds, nearly half a straightaway, over T.J. Reaid. Casey Smith was third, one spot ahead of Johanna Long. Long worked her way through the field after starting 25th dead last.

Stephen Nasse finished fifth, followed by Clay Rogers, Austin Theriault, Mike Garvey, Donnie Wilson and Logan Boyett in 10th.

Boyett set a new track record in qualifying when he turned a lap in 15.056 seconds. That shattered Pollards track best of 15.092 set in July of 2010.

However, Pollard and Benjamin had the two dominant super late model cars in the first half of the race. The both pitted under caution on lap 188 of the 250-lap feature, their second and final stops, earlier than the other drivers.

We put on our second set of tires at lap 100 and we just didnt have the right heat cycle in them, Pollard said of the mandatory five-minute caution flag. We knew we couldnt finish on the tires we had and had to come in early enough to get by the guys in front of us.

Its all about luck in these races. We had a good race car.

After the second pit stop on lap 188, Benjamin restarted seventh and Pollard ninth. In just five laps, Benjamin had moved to fifth and was battling D.J. VanderLey for fourth place. Benjamin had the inside line and VanderLey was on the outside. They bumped coming out of Turn 4. VanderLey skidded into the outside wall in front of the main grandstand. Benjamins ride was more interesting. He went airborne, into the catch fencing, then crashed back to the track and barrel-rolled, stopping just past the start-finish line on his roof.

The race was red-flagged as crews cleaned the debris and removed the cars from the track. Neither driver was injured.

In the super race, we had a great car all day, Benjamin said. Im not really sure what happened. Theres two sides to the story.

Benjamins side in the heat of the moment was that VanderLey dumped him. The teenager calmed down after the race.

The final caution came out on lap 224. Smith was leading, followed by Reaid, Pollard and Mike Garvey, who pitted when he felt his car getting tight.

The race stayed green for the final 26 laps. Two laps after the restart, Smith checked up when Grill had a problem in front of him. Reaid bumped him and Pollard took advantage, flying around those drivers and into the lead. He cruised from there.

The second race was the 100-lap Rattler 100 for pro late model cars.

Grill, Pollard, Benjamin and Garvey all key players from the first race were back at it. Late in the race, the cars seemed to drive tighter, the drivers said. But no one was willing to give up track position.

Pollards car went away first, with 25 laps remaining. The order stayed Grill, Garvey, Benjamin and pole-sitter R.S. Senter.

But Grill ran off the track when he came up on lapped traffic and damaged his left front with about 10 laps remaining. Benjamin got around Grill with five laps remaining and set his sights on Garvey, whose car kept getting tighter.

On lap 98, with two to go, Garvey got wide between the first and second turns and Benjamin pounced Garvey said literally.

He got even as they got into Turn 3, dumping Benjamin into the wall.

When I got loose, Kyle got in there and blasted me in the door and door-slammed me, Garvey said. It made me mad. I wanted to go back into 3 and I just meant to move him. But I spun him out.

It was clearly my fault. We cost ourselves and our team the win. Basically, we gave one away. You shouldnt give races away.

Grill, despite his damaged left front, inherited the race the lead and held off Senter and Pollard for the victory.

Mason Massey was fourth, followed by Chris Davidson, Kyle Plott, Cole Powell, Brandon Jones, Brandon Odom and Anderson Bowen.

I ran up on some lapped cars and ran off the track and bent something there on the left front, Grill said of his late-race gaffe. It wasnt the same after that. I could maintain about four car lengths on Garvey, but after that he just closed right up on my bumper and got by me.

Luckily, my bonehead move was righted by his bonehead move. He just flat spun the 71 car out. He got loose off 2. I think he thought the 71 had gotten into him, but he didnt. Then he came into 3 and just spun him out.

For Benjamin, the 14-year-old from Easley, S.C., it was a day he will learn from. He finished, officially, 17th in the super late model race and 18th in the pro late model race.

We had a good car in both races, he said. I havent been upside down much like I was in the first race. Im glad cars still in one piece.

Im not sure what happened with Garvey right there. I got under him. Really, he was sideways and came down. He runs into the back of me. Hes a great driver. I dont understand why he did that.

Asked if he was tired, the 14-year-old said, It wasnt that tiring of a day, but I got tired of getting wrecked.

Annabeth Barnes

Local and Regional Short Track Racing

A lot has changed since Annabeth Barnes was 11 years old.

She has left behind basketball and braces and moved on to a drivers license and hanging out with friends. But one thing that remains steady in Annabeths life, even today at 16, is race car driving.

My dad raced stock cars, so I always grew up watching him race, Annabeth said. I just loved watching him and I want to be like my dad.

Annabeth got her start in racing after watching her sister, who is four years older, race go-karts. At age 7, Annabeth entered in her first go-kart race at Riverside Kartway.

I remember being scared and nervous, Annabeth said. But you can never be afraid Fear keeps people from doing anything.

In her short career, Annabeth has racked up 17 championship titles and has driven go-karts, Bandolero cars and limited late models. In 2011, Annabeth transitioned to late model stock cars and raced for the first time at Hickory Motor Speedway.

And she is no stranger to being in the spotlight. While racing at Hickory Kart Fest, a camera crew stopped Annabeth, then 11, to ask her about racing. Annabeth was one of dozens filmed that day, but the only girl chosen to be featured in a documentary called Racing Dreams, executively produced by actor/wrestler Dwayne Johnson, The Rock.

I knew I didnt want to make another classic competition kid film, said the films director, Marshall Curry. I was looking for people that could carry the story. Who was winning races wasnt as interesting to me as much as who had a good story.

Curry said he found that in Annabeth, a young girl making her way in a male-dominated sport. Racing Dreams follows Annabeth as she participates in the World Karting Association Asphalt Nationals and as she travels around the country. Filming took place in several states, including Indiana and New York.

It was such a great time in my life and its so great to look back on it, Annabeth said. It was a sense of family with the crew from the first day.

But Annabeth said there was a time in her career she questioned if racing was the right path for her. When I was in middle school, I was thinking, What am I doing? she said. All of that is captured in the movie.

Curry said he kept documentary production small, only allowing two or three people to follow Annabeth and her family at a time. The intimacy of the way I make movies allows people to feel more comfortable, he said.

The crew followed Annabeth throughout the racing season and visited her about twice a month at her home in Hiddenite.

Annabeth is a great kid and is very smart, Curry said. We caught her in an amazing year where she was in a crisis battling racing and being a normal kid.

Word spread, and the Great American Country network decided to feature Annabeth and her family in a four-episode series that aired in January. Although she had been featured in a documentary before, Annabeth said she was still nervous about the hour-long episodes that focused solely on her family.

We werent quite sure how they would portray us, because we are just normal, Annabeth said. It turned out unbelievably well.

As for the future, Annabeths goal is to become a NASCAR driver and also become the first woman to win the Daytona 500. But if that doesnt pan out, she said she would like to become a pediatric nurse. In the meantime, she spends almost every weekend racing last season it was 48 out of 52 weeks and preparing for a day she may become a professional race car driver.

Its all about believing in yourself, she said.

About ANNABETH BARNES

Staying motivated: I have to keep focused on my goal because the thought of making it always keeps me going. I tell myself that it might be easier to give up, but nothing worth having is ever easy.

To be considered wise: To me (thats) someone who understands that you only get one go-around in life. And they live their life knowing that every second is precious, every minute counts and every day is another chance to get it right.

Greatest obstacle: (That) will always be that I am a female in a mostly male sport. Most of the time people dont take me as seriously as they should, especially other drivers. But that just makes me race harder, knowing that I have something to prove to them, and to the world.

Three things everyone should always have with them: A smile, an open mind and a good attitude.

One thing worth remembering in tough times: The God on the mountain is still God in the valley."

Fun fact: Im obsessed with Arizona Green Tea!
