Daniels Gets Second Win At Florence Motor Speedway

General

Timmonsville SC Some things about the Late Model feature werent pretty, but it was still an awesome race. First off a young woman beat the boys in qualifying. Holly Jackson set fast time with a 17.938 lap to second fastest and youngest driver Jarrett Smith with an 18.118. At the drop of the green, Smith had to work on it but finally maintained a dominant lead on the field. His lead would last until just past halfway of 50 laps when the handle went away and veteran Ronnie Daniels took the Budweiser Chevy to the front and on to the checkers. Holly was right with Daniels and they put on another fine display of close racing, as has been precedence since the season began. Robert Powell would finish third, Donnie Johnson fourth and Jarrett Smith fifth.

Other winners of the evening included Bozie Lane in the Super Stock feature and Kevin Jackson in the Stock 4 feature.

The excitement is set to continue on May 7th so make plans to see the great series of local short track racing. And lastly a very special thank, you to Carolina Batteries, for additional sponsor support for the weekly racing program!

General Admission: Adults (13 and up) $10.00 Children (8 to 12 years) $5.00 Children (7 andunder) FREE. Special Events: $12 and up and Group discounts for 25 or more fans. These ticket prices are for all qualifying races and five (5) feature races at the asphalt track and plus the action of the FMS Kart track. Racing programs begin at 7 pm.

Myers Wins GMAC Insurance 200 At Bowman Gray

General

Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC - A few weeks ago, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove was lying in a hospital bed. But on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium, Myers was standing in Winners Circle.Myers took the checkered in the season-opening GMAC Insurance 200, the longest and most prestigious race of the season for the GMAC Insurance Modified Series.A recent accident in competition outside of the Bowman Gray Stadium racing season left Myers with broken ribs and a potentially ruined 2011 championship. But after some quick healing and clearance from doctors, Myers is back at the Stadium to defend his Modified title. The stuff Ive been through in the last couple weeks, its just been overwhelming, said Myers. The 200-lapper started off with Tim Brown of Cana, VA on the pole after a blistering lap in qualifying sessions. Brown traded the lead back and forth with Lee Jeffreys of High Point during the early double-file restarts.Brian Loftin of Lexington used the outside lane in restarts to climb his way up from a seventh place start, challenging Jeffreys for the lead on lap 47. The two battled side-by-side for almost two laps until Loftin was able to complete the pass and slip by Jeffreys.John Smith of Mount Airy took to the outside during a restart to make his own claim for the top spot. Smith got ahead of Loftin but lost control as the cluttered cars at the front of the pack bumped him coming out of the turn.At about the 150-lap mark, Burt Myers made the decision that led to his victory: he pitted to put on a pair of fresh tires. We had about 50 to go, and I said You know what - lets get two, said Myers. It set me on fire.Myers took advantage of the double-file restarts to race back towards the front, giving Loftin a good fight for the lead. The 23 car of Loftins held off Myers the first time, but Myerss fresh tires allowed him to pull ahead a few laps later. It was a little frustrating giving up a win like that, said Brian Loftin. I felt like we had the best car. The tires fell right for Burt, and he was able to get back up there quickly. Our car was great. I dont know anything we couldve done to make it better.Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem moved up to put the heat on the bumper of Myers. The number 53 of Brown delivered a few good shots to Myers but was unable to grab the win.Myers took the checkered with Jonathan Brown finishing in second. Brian Loftin claimed third, and John Smith took fourth. Tim Brown, who qualified on the pole, finished 11th after a last-lap confrontation with Jason Myers. In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Luke Fleming of Mount Airy won the 40-lap race. Pole qualifier Tommy Neal of Walkertown finished second, with Kenny Bost of Kernersville finishing in third.David Sumner of Trinity brought home the victory in the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. John McNeal of Winston-Salem and Randy Larimore of Walkertown finished second and third. In the Freemans Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Wesley Thompson of Mocksville took the checkered in the first race. The second race was postponed due to curfew.

Hendrick Motorsports has signed Chase Elliott to a multi-year driver agreement.

General

CONCORD, N.C. Hendrick Motorsports has signed Chase Elliott to a multi-year driver agreement.Elliott, the son of 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Bill Elliott, will continue to compete for his family-owned team until meeting age requirements for entering NASCAR national series events. Bill Elliott Racing, based in Dawsonville, Ga., will field Chevrolets with support from Hendrick Motorsports. The apple hasnt fallen far from the tree with Chase, said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. Ive always admired Bills ability in a race car and how he handled himself with the fans. I see those same traits in Chase, with his natural driving talent and an awareness of what he needs to do away from the track to be successful. He comes from a great racing family, and it shows. We think its a terrific situation. Chase already has a strong support system in place (in Dawsonville) that will allow him to focus on his education and grow as a driver, and Hendrick Motorsports will provide whatever kind of assistance the Elliotts need in any area.A 15-year-old freshman in high school, Elliott already has competed against some of the best short-track racers in the United States. In 40 late model starts last season, he posted 13 victories, 27 top-five finishes and 37 top-10s.Ive always been taught that teamwork and people are important, and thats something Mr. Hendrick really believes in, Elliott said. Everyone at Hendrick Motorsports has high standards and takes a lot of pride in what they do. Racing with all of their support, and the support of my family, is going to be incredible. Im going to work really hard to make them proud and make the most of this opportunity. In 2010, Elliott became the youngest driver to win the Blizzard Series at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., the Miller Lite Series at Mobile (Ala.) International Speedway and the overall Sunoco Gulf Coast championship. The Dawsonville native also posted victories in the prestigious Winchester 400 and at the re-opening of historic North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway.Elliott already is two-for-two in 2011 after sweeping the Speedfest late-model features last month at Lanier National Speedway in Braselton, Ga. This season, he plans to enter a combination of super late model, pro late model and NASCAR regional touring series events.
