Thomas Warren/Woody Delbridge Video Find - Joe Weatherly's Final Richmond Win - Dirt - 1963 - Bud Moore Pontiac

Stock Car Racing History

RR member, Woody Delbridge from Richmond was alerted by Thomas Warren to an awesome, several years old, little viewed YouTube video (200+ total views) that he unearthed of 1963 8mm film capturing Joe Weatherly's final win at the half-mile Richmond dirt track on April 7, 1963 before 15,000 fans attending the Richmond 250.

Little Joe is driving the red & black #8 Bud Moore Pontiac. Joe would be killed the following January at Riverside. This was the last of Joe's three Richmond wins.

All kinds of interesting stuff in this film. You can see the old white board fence with the black & white striped wheel wall and the wooden supports at the base of the light poles that spelled doom for LeeRoy Yarbrough and Tiny Lund at Richmond in 1965 when they slid into them coming out of the pits in the mud.

The pole position for this race was captured by RR member, Rex White, with David Pearson on the outside pole in the Cotton Owens #6 Dodge. Cotton's second entry, Billy Wade in the #5 Dodge, had the better finish, though - 4th.

For this event, Richard Petty chose to drive the #41 Plymouth with Jim Paschal in the #43. Paschal would lead the race, Petty wouldn't.

Ray Fox had two cars in the race. The #3 you see on the hook near the film's conclusion is the Junior Johnson #3 "Mystery Chevy" with a blown engine. G.C. Spencer drove a second Ray Fox Holly Farms Poultry entry - #03 - a 1962 Chevy.

The white #20 is Richmond's "Golden Greek" - Emanuel Zervakis - making one of just three GN starts in his final year of competition.

The #22 Ford you see on pit road is indeed Fireball Roberts in the Holman-Moody entry. His 427 blew on lap 70. It was a rare half-mile dirt appearance for Fireball at that point in time. Promoter Paul Sawyer must have dangled some really good $$$ in John Holman's face.

You'll also see a good shot of Wendell Scott's #34 1962 Chevy.

That's Herman "The Turtle" Beam puttering down the front straight in the 1962 Ford #19. Although 37 laps down at the finish, Herman parlayed his 23rd starting position into a 13th place finish, still running at the end!

Fearless Fred Lorenzen lasted just 80 laps in the Stewart McKinney Ford, exiting with a blown engine, also, and finished 22nd.

Ned Jarrett would finish second to Weatherly. You can see his white (or extremely light blue) #11 Burton Robinson Concrete Construction Ford fielded by Red Robinson of Fairfax, Virginia. Ned would drive this same car to a win at the 1963 September Richmond Capital City 300 GN.

Pole sitter Rex White finished 3rd.

Junior Johnson appeared to have a win in hand when the Mystery Chevy blew late in the race , handing the lead to Little Joe. Junior still managed a 5th place, just 8 laps down with the blown porcupine.

This is some really historic stuff and dear to my heart as a Richmond native, former employee of the Richmond track and old sponsor of winning car owner, Bud Moore.

Thank you so much Woody Delbridge and Thomas Warren for sharing this awesome find posted on YouTube by poster DanObx64 as Richmond Raceway 1964 - the year was wrong but what wonderful stuff. You'll see lots of interesting names from our NASCAR past in this 8mm film.

December 9th racing history

Stock Car Racing History

Just this past weekend, on December 7, columnist, Sharon Schlegel in The Times of Trenton (as in Trenton, NJ - onetime home to the Schaefer 300) posed a couple of questions in the same paragraph involving both Winston and NASCAR that had nothing to do with racing:

Whatever happened to as? In 1954, the William Esty ad agency for Winston cigarettes decided on the deliberate use of like rather than as, airing the jingle Winston Tastes Good, Like a Cigarette Should. Faster than smoke curls from a cig, as began to disappear. It has never returned. Last week NASCAR ran a big ad in New York Magazine under the headline We End How We Began. Shouldnt it be as we began?

Tim, I bet you and Dick May were quite a pair when STP came on board Petty Enterprises and there were STP stickers to accompany the Winston stickers!

East Carolina Joins NASCAR

Late Model Stock Cars, Friday Night Racing New for 2014
By Paul Schaefer, NASCAR
November 23, 2013 - 2:07pm

East Carolina Motor Speedway and NASCAR announced Saturday night that the Robersonville, N.C., track will join the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series for 2014.

The .375-mile high-banked paved tri-oval will feature NASCAR Late Model Stock Cars as its premier division, and will be the only will be the only Friday night NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track in North Carolina.

eastcarolinamotorspeedway The track is located in eastern North Carolina, about 90 miles east of Raleigh, N.C., or 20 miles north of Greenville, N.C. It is owned by Wayne Perry and operated by his son, track president Chris Perry.

East Carolina Motor Speedway is a perfect fit for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, said Bob Duvall, NASCAR senior director, business development. Wayne and Chris Perry are committed to providing a home for great Friday night racing and family entertainment.

Established in 1982, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is NASCARs national championship program for weekly short track auto racing. More than 50 paved and dirt tracks throughout the United States and Canada participate.

East Carolina Motor Speedway opened in 1990. The Perry family purchased the facility in 2005 and leased it out through 2011. They assumed management and promotion of the track in 2012 and put the facility on a constant rejuvenation program.

We want people to be proud of where they race, Wayne Perry said. We have a great race track. Our first job was to create an environment that our participants and fans can like. Our next step is to put East Carolina Motor Speedway on the NASCAR racing map.

NASCAR brings credibility, visibility and recognition and thats what we want, Chris Perry said. We want East Carolina Motor Speedway and Robersonville to be a destination people feel good about supporting.

As the only Friday night NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track in the state, the speedway could become a hub for North Carolina and Virginia drivers chasing state and national NASCAR points.

Our NASCAR Late Model Stock Car division is based on the NASCAR rule book so we can welcome teams inside and outside our immediate area, Wayne Perry said. We invite all of them to stop in for a visit.

East Carolina Motor Speedway is a challenging tri-oval. The turns are banked at 24 degrees and straightaways at 10 degrees. The start-finish line is at the pinnacle of the tri-oval, much like Daytona International Speedway.

Its tight and its a racers track, Chris Perry said. It has a lot of personality.

The Perry family has been in the automotive business for five generations. They began operating a General Motors dealership in Elizabeth City, N.C., in 1916, two years before Chevrolet became a GM brand. Todays Perry Auto Group operates two dealerships in Elizabeth City including Performance Chevrolet and Carolina Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Wayne Perry is president of Perry Auto Group and Chris Perry is vice president and general manager.

The family has been involved with stock car racing since the 1950s beginning with Wayne Perrys uncle Harry and father Lowell. Harry Perry set two records participating in speed trials on The Flying Mile shore course of Ormond Beach, Fla., in the early 1950s. He was a contemporary and friend of NASCAR founder Bill France. Perry occasionally fielded a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car in the mid-1950s for drivers including Ray Platte and Joe Weatherly. Harry and Lowell Perry fielded a NASCAR Modified Sportsman car driven by Shelton McNair in the 1959 Permatex 250 at the new Daytona International Speedway. Wayne Perry attended a Daytona beach-road course race in the 1950s and the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959.

I met Bill France when I was 13 years old. Thats when I told my dad thats what I wanted to do. I wanted to race, Wayne Perry said.

Wayne and Chris Perry raced Late Models for a time at southeast at tracks including Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedway, South Boston (Va.) Speedway, Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., and Southern National Motorsports Park in Kenly, N.C.

With the addition of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars in 2014, East Carolina Motor Speedway will have a five division show. The tracks 2013 divisional champions include Wesley Johnson, Late Models; Glenn Avery, Street Stocks; Andy Ipock, Mini Stocks; and Duane Walker, Ucar.

The track website is www.ecspeedway.com .

NASCAR-licensed Division I drivers are eligible to compete for NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championships and special awards at the track, state and national level. NASCAR special award programs are also available for support division drivers.

Pavement Late Model driver Lee Pulliam, 24, of Semora, N.C., won the 2013 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship.

Connecticut-based Whelen Engineering is the series title sponsor. Whelen Engineering is a leading manufacturer of automotive, aviation, industrial and emergency vehicle lighting. NASCAR tracks and pace cars across North America are among the many showcases for Whelen products.

Racing History Minute - December 8, 1968

Stock Car Racing History

Chase, you had previously posted the two photos below on January 30, 2013 of Paschal at Rockingham when he drove the burgundy 1966 Friedkin Enterprises Plymouth #14 in the March 13, 1966 Peach Blossom 500. How I wish it was in color. The battle Jim put on for the lead with Cale Yarborough in the #27 orange/red Banjo Matthews Ford remains the best side-by-side battle I've ever seen at a superspeedway.

Racing History Minute - December 8, 1968

Stock Car Racing History

When Jim Paschal first teamed with Tom Friedkin in 1965, Friedkin's car was a 1965 Chevy #41 painted a good looking reddish / burgundy as seen below in the Southern 500 at Darlington:

The first Jim Paschal / Tom Friedkin Plymouths - in 1966 - were painted this same good looking reddish / burgundy color combination. I had terrific 8mm color film of Paschal in the #14 burgundy Friedkin Plymouth battling Cale at Rockingham in the inaugural (and only) Peach Blossom 500. My eyesight and my color 8mm film confirmed that the car was much more of a burgundy than the more red models and few color photos (that need color correction) indicate - such as the photo below:

In 1968, also, my racing hero, "Mr. Modified" Ray Hendrick of Richmond at age 39, was allowed to drive the Friedkin Plymouth. He competed in 4 short track events - South Boston, Langley Field, Richmond and Martinsville - posting a 5th, a 6th and two 7th place finishes.

Stocks for Tots Update

Current NASCAR

Tim Leeming and Jeff Gilder are involved with the RR live broadcast from the annual Stocks for Tots event and I'm sure have much more detailed information, but the story below appeared in this morning's Charlotte newspaper:

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richard Petty highlight Stocks-For-Tots

MORE INFORMATION

  • STOCKS-FOR-TOTS

    When: 5-9 p.m. Tuesday

Where: NASCAR Technical Institute, 220 Byers Creek Road, Mooresville, in Talbert Pointe Business Park off I-77, Exit 36.

    Details: www.stocksfortots.org .

Some of NASCARs biggest names, including Dale Earnhardt Jr. and retired drivers Richard Petty and Bobby Allison, will sign autographs and pose for photos at the 25th annual Stocks-For-Tots benefit in Mooresville on Tuesday.

NASCAR Technical Institute in Talbert Pointe Business Park will host the event, which is expected to draw 1,000 visitors.

Since 1989, Stocks-For-Tots has raised a total of about $1 million and collected 50,000 toys for Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN), a local nonprofit that works to prevent child abuse through parenting classes, a parent support group, home visits and other initiatives.

The North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame in Mooresvilles Lakeside Business Park started Stocks-For-Tots.

Purchasing a ticket for the 2013 holiday fundraiser allows NASCAR fans to give back to their local community while meeting motorsports greats.

NASCAR legends Rusty Wallace and Leonard Wood also are scheduled to appear, as are current drivers Ryan Newman, Mike Wallace, David Regan, David Gilliland and Mike Bliss. National Hot Rod Association drag racers Doug Herbert, Greg Anderson and Jason Line also will attend.

Beginning at 5 p.m., this years fundraiser will include several celebrity autograph sessions, a silent auction and a chance to visit with Santa Claus. Admission is $10 cash and a new unwrapped toy with a $10 value.

The toys will be given to children in about 100 families served by SCAN. Any extra toys will go to the Iredell County Department of Social Services to be distributed among other families seeking assistance.

For those unable to attend, NASCAR Live with Eli Gold will broadcast live from the event to a nationwide audience from 7 to 8 p.m. on all Motor Racing Network affiliates.

Fans also will be able to buy items from the Stocks-For-Tots memorabilia store, including autographed sheet metal, wheels and crew shirts donated by several NASCAR teams.

Stocks-For-Tots is the perfect family-friendly event, bringing together race enthusiasts eager to support a good cause, and NASCAR Tech is honored to once again be a part of this special holiday tradition, John Dodson of NASCAR Technical Institute said in announcing this years fundraiser. We are proud to serve as the venue for an event that continually helps to improve the lives of so many young individuals in our community.
