Racing History Minute - September 3, 1962

Stock Car Racing History

Two Additional Racing History Minutes from September 3, 1973 - 40 Years Ago:

***** 40 years ago tonight Danny Lee put our '55 Chevy Limited Sportsman car on the outside front row beside RR member and former NASCAR Grand American driver Joe Dean Huss for the big Labor Day Night Late Model Feature 200 lapper at Chantilly Speedway in Weldon (Roanoke Rapids) , North Carolina. We broke an axle and Joe Huss in his 426 Hemi Plymouth (are you listening, Tim Leeming?) won. The photo below of our car that I use as my avatar was taken during a caution flag by my good friend Frank Buhrman 40 years tonight, on September 3, 1973, at Chantilly Speedway.

R.I.P. Danny Lee

***** And also 40 years ago tonight , following the Labor Day Monday night race at Chantilly Speedway on September 3, 1973, I proposed to my wife Joyce . Her ears being filled with red clay and tire rubber, I guess , she said YES and we were married on November 3, 1973.

Looking at the 1974 photo above of Cale's Junior Johnson "Hey Mable, Black Label" Carling Beer entry made me wonder if any GN/Cup owner can top Junior fielding suds cars for Carling, Busch and Budweiser.

Fonty Flock, who'd earned the nickname of "Crackup King" due to numerous accidents, ran only two 1957 GN races - the Southern 500 in the Herb Thomas car and a third place run for Bill Stroppe on the beach at Daytona in February 1957.

From his Florence, SC hospital bed on the day of the Bobby Myers accident, Flock announced his retirement from racing. The 1957 Southern 500 was his final GN start. Flock passed in Decatur, Georgia in 1972 at age 51 following a lengthy illness.

Thanks, Tim. Had never heard about NASCAR banning black cars.

Yeah, that's why I prefaced my post with the disclaimer that this event came after the move from labor Day... but too many good story lines to ignore.

Chase, as thorough as you and Tim Leeming have been... I believe there's another omitted September 1 Southern 500 that had several good story lines. However, it came after the race moved from Labor Day Monday to Sunday.

It took place on September 1, 1985. The race had a 50 year old rookie, who had been offered the chance to skip the then required rookie test in deference to his racing experience. He elected to take the rookie test, carry yellow rookie stripes and skip first round qualifying. That driver never used his two first given names of Anthony and Joseph. Any guess as to that driver's name?

There was also the matter of a redheaded fellow from RR member, Cody Dinsmore's neck of the woods who picked up an unusual nickname at The Southern 500 of September 1, 1985.
