ARE YOU READY FOR THE REAL THING? ? ?

I flipped it on, then flipped it off when I heard what a huge lead Ty Dillon had. I shoulda kept watching.

Too cool... what a surprise that must have been!
Blane, I used to sit in the Robert E. Lee on row 17... high enough to see, but low enough that the roof line didn't cut off backstretch view.
But the noise, as you say was terrific. My ears would ring for a couple of days. Always had to be back at work on Tuesday, sometimes all the way back to Richmond. Always had a terrible headache.
Tim, I always thought my banners weren't any good if fans didn't want to take them. If I had banners in prime TV areas, we'd often find fans camped close by and tell 'em if they "kept an eye on our banner" until the race was over, they could have it and other extra goodies. Sometimes it worked. And we always paid off.
Great memories, Tim. I had completely forgotten about the AMC Matador winning at Darlington.
Can you imagine the headlines if you guys had all drowned in the Darlington infield?! Terrific story.
Great banner, Johnny. And you got Dale Inman as an added attraction, extra bonus?! Wow. Can't wait for more stuff to come.
Curtis' Schwam Motor Company "Wild Hogs" fellow Virginian teammate, Joe Weatherly finished 2nd to Turner at Greenville, but had to settle for 8th at darlington.
I guess if they don't blister or blow out, aren't so hard there is no grip, but not so soft that they wear out quickly, the drivers and crew chiefs will be happy. Unless the tread separates. Got it now??!!
Goodyear is set to debut a new technology racing tire at Atlanta this weekend. Here's the Goodyear news release:
Goodyear Debuts New NASCAR Tire Technology in Atlanta...Newest Goodyear Eagle race tire features Multi-Zone Tread Technology to handle the challenging conditions of Atlanta Motor Speedway
AKRON, Ohio, August 29, 2013 As drivers take to the track for this weekends NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, theyll be riding on a newly designed Goodyear Eagle race tire with roots in consumer tire technology.
Goodyears new right-side tire for Atlanta marks the introduction of its Multi-Zone Tread Technology, which combines two different rubber compounds in a single tread to face the conditions of one of NASCARs most demanding speedways. And while Goodyear often applies what it learns in the high-performance world of NASCAR to the development of consumer tires, this time technology was transferred from the street to the track.
Atlanta is one of our biggest challenges from a tire perspective, said Stu Grant, Goodyears general manager of worldwide racing. The abrasive track surface causes extremely high wear, while the length and layout promote very high speeds.
To face this challenge, Goodyear engineers set out to develop a tire capable of offering both superior traction and weartwo typically opposing properties. The solution was found in Goodyears Assurance TripleTred All-Season passenger tire. The Assurance TripleTred pioneered the concept of multiple tread zones in auto tires, featuring three distinct zones for superior traction in wet, icy and dry conditions.
Developing the right tire for each NASCAR track always requires finding a good balance between traction and durability, said Grant. The goal of our new Multi-Zone Tread is to help us offer drivers more of both.
To accomplish this, Goodyears newest NASCAR tire utilizes two unique tread zones. An Endurance Zone on the tires inside shoulder features a firmer compound to help manage wear for enhanced durability on the track. The outside two-thirds of the tread makes up the tires Traction Zone, which uses a more tractive tread compound to help increase grip for superior handling.
Goodyear has tested the Multi-Zone Tread tire several times over the past year. The most recent test took place in Atlanta earlier this month, where 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams put the tire through its paces with very positive results and feedback.
Teams were able to tune their cars to the tire and get the balance of the car right, said Grant. Drivers seemed pleased with the performance during the test, and we expect similar results for the races this weekend.
Following this weekends race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Goodyear will also consider tires featuring a Multi-Zone Tread for additional tracks on the NASCAR schedule.
This is the second notable example of how Goodyear has transferred street technology to its racing tires. For the 2009 racing season, the tire maker introduced a wet weather radial for use in the NASCAR Nationwide Series that has a tread pattern based on the street Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season tire.
Your last Southern 500 before Navy duty - the September 5, 1966 Southern 500 - was my first. That's the one Frank & I rode a Greyhound bus down from Richmond to attend. I pulled for Richard that day and was disappointed when he blew a tire while leading in the waning laps and handed the victory to the Bud Moore #16 Comet driven by Darel Dieringer. I would have never guessed that day I'd one day count both Darel and Bud as friends.
You'll remember in that race Earl Balmer knocking down the first turn guard rail and almost landing his K&K Dodge #71 in the press box.
