July 11th - Its 7-11 day
Stock Car Racing History
I guess The Legend doesn't like pizza! He coulda just said an appearance would interfere with his Legendtorial broadcast on Tuesday night.
Interesting about Bud Lindemann being the Grand River announcer. Bud's son, Dave Lindemann talked me into loaning Car & Track Productions in 1997 my entire collection of 8mm and Super 8 movie film dating to 1964 to use for a NASCAR contracted production to celebrate NASCAR's 50th Anniversary in 1998. Also on loan was the bulk of my photo collection. It was all lost in a fire at Car & Track Productions' facility. Dave Lindemann then closed the operation and relocated to Florida. I was bitten in the backside 16 years ago by being "nice."
The race was also referenced in the July 14, 1963 Daytona paper AP story referencing Ned Jarrett going for the points lead:
Somewhere in my attic is a box with a reel-to-reel recording I made from the live Universal Racing Network radio broadcast of Ned Jarrett's November 7, 1965 win in the Tidewater 300 at Moyock Dog Track. By then the auto track had been paved and enlarged to 1/3-mile.
This series is very informative. So glad you found it, Chase. Gene Granger was a heck of an interviewer. I used to sit in his Spartanburg basement while he called car owner and drivers' wives while the husbands were away to get scoops. I was down there when Harry Ranier's wife let all kinds of cats out of the bag to Gene. Miss him.
By the way... the very same 1969 Ford Talladega that Hylton drove to his first Cup win in 1970 at Richmond also won the spring 1969 Richmond race. It was painted blue and gold, carried number 17 and was driven by David Pearson for Holman-Moody.
