Racing History Minute - May 25, 1956

Stock Car Racing History

The late William H. "BLACKIE" Pitt of Rocky Mount, NC - NASCAR's first named Rookie of the Year in 1954 - posted an 8th place finish in his brother, W.W. "BROWNIE" Pitt's '56 Buick at the Abbottstown event.

Wonder if the Pitt boys might have had any other brothers, perhaps a "Whitey" or "Red?!"

Here's a 1958 T.Taylor Warren photo of Blackie Pitt from the Studebaker racing site. He finished 10th at Occonnochee in 1958 in this car.

Thank, Tim. I find it especially interesting to hear tales of races at tracks with which I am not familiar, such as Abbottstown.

I note from the track's web site, that Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania is still operating and observing its 60th anniversary season in 2013. Here are two photos from that web site - one of the track and the other an article from its 1953 opening:

Have a Safe Memorial Day Weekend

General

Got up this morning and unfurled our American flag and mounted it for the Memorial Day weekend.

Then spent many hours cutting grass and trimming.

Here's wishing a very safe holiday weekend to all RR members, whether you travel or stay home.

Hoping for some good races at Charlotte and Indy.

Remembering those who gave their lives so we'd be able to enjoy our picnics, parades and races.

May 24, 1964: Paschal's overlooked World 600 win

Stock Car Racing History

Having Tim Leeming's personal memories included in your blog add a lot of authenticity, Chase. I believe he was about 2 years old the first time he got Richard's autograph! It was indeed a sad day for racing.

You mentioned the Eddie Sachs/Dave MacDonald crash at Indy six days later. I watched thta on closed circuit television in Richmond - only time I ever saw a closed circuit telecast.

As we all know, 1964 was just a horrible year for losing great race car drivers. The list is lengthy.

Racing History Minute - May 24, 1959

Stock Car Racing History

That's a couple of pretty amazing stats, Tim.... especially for 1959 - no cautions and all cars finishing.

I move that Jeff put Chase on retainer as the oficial microfilm researcher of RR. That fellow sure knows what he is doing!

Dennis, I remember seeing the Honest Charley logos in the racing mags back in the day.
