Racing History Minute - May 7, 1977

Stock Car Racing History

Legend can make up all sorts of stories, but now we have photographic proof that he was a "closet" Jaws fan, even being so bold as to accompany the mouthy one to victory lane.

In the wake of Chase's irrefutable picture evidence, Tim has elected to "come out" right here before our eyes on RR!!! I guess ole Legend figured the long hair and no cowboy hat would not fool us too long once we enlarged the photo.

Good work, Chase!

Thanks, Tim. Always loved going to the Nashville races, though I didn't make it there for the first time until 1981. Several times instead of flying, I drove the Wrangler van and took our young daughters. They loved the little amusement park outside turn 4.

You're giving the "research staff" too much time off!

Those conditions reminded me of the 1982 Gabriel 400 at Michigan. It was halted several times for rain for several hours. They said the television viewers could see the finish of Cale beating DW as captured by the CBS cameras, but darned if we could see the first turn from pit road. It was DARK!

May 5, 1963: Jim Paschal Wins in Petty's Backyard

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks, Chase. Found it interesting to read in your blog post about Cliff Stewart. Sometime in late 1987 - early 1988 Cliff was considering another comeback and I went with Ed McLean who used to head up Pontiac's racing program to visit Cliff and be given a personal tour of his furniture factory. Nothing came of the exploratory visit and we wound up linking Morgan Shepherd in a test run for the Heinz Ketchup sponsorship that eventually became the brief return to NASCAR of Rod Osterlund with Hut Stricklin driving.

My Portal has a glitch in it

Stock Car Racing History

When you said your portal had a glitch I was afraid Legend had punched you out or something!

Glad to see more of the Southern Nites history and to see you were getting a little more torque for that truck.

In 1972, then 44 year old Hershel McGriff swept both Portland, Oregon NASCAR Winston West races in his 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner, thought to be a former Petty car. Photo below is from one of those two 1972 Portland wins - Beep, Beep!!
