Racing History Minute Times Two, plus some, April 28, 1957

Stock Car Racing History

Here's a shot of April 28, 1957 Portland Cup winner, Art Watts at the Portland Speedway 4 years later, in 1961. The late driver was inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2009.

Photo posted on Stock Car Reunion web site.

In 2000, Portland Speedway made the decision to tear up its asphalt surface and return to its original mid-1920s clay.

Watts didn't make his first Cup start until age 36 in 1954 and only started 19 total Cup races. He made one trip east in 1954, qualifying 19th and finishing 21st in the 1954 Southern 500 at Darlington driving a Hudson Hornet.

In 1957, Watts sat on the pole for all five Cup races he entered, three of which were at Portland.

His last Cup race came at age 45 in 1963 at Riverside.

BTW, Eddie Pagan would qualify on the pole for the 1958 Southern 500 at Darlington, then prove that Darlington's steel ARMCO guard rail was no match for a NASCAR stock car.

Some tremendous racers in both of those fields. Eddie Pagan in the Oregon race later opened Hutcherson-Pagan in Charlotte, the chassis builder and parts supplier in partnership with Dick Hutcherson. My one-time business partner bought his speed boat which was docked on Lake Wylie.

I had never heard until your post, Tim, about NASCAR banning the manufacturers from advertising race results. Sounds like the policy of Consumer Reports Magazine, except they don't beg for sponsor advertising and expenditures like NASCAR.

Thanks for another highly informative history lesson.

Beautiful, Cody!!

That truck "Might" have been assembled in Joe Weatherly country, at Ford's now closed Norfolk Assembly Plant:

NORFOLK FORD TRUCK ASSEMBLY PLANT ENDS PRODUCTION

PLANT FACTS: NORFOLK ASSEMBLY PLANT
HISTORICAL TIMELINE: NORFOLK ASSEMBLY

NORFOLK, Va., June 28, 2007 Production ended today at Ford Motor Companys Norfolk Assembly Plant when the last vehicle a red 2007 Ford F-150 Lariat rolled off the assembly line. The 2.6 million square-feet plant, which employed 1,250 hourly and salaried workers, idled at 7:50 a.m.

For 82 years, the Norfolk Assembly workforce has built quality and pride into every vehicle coming off this assembly line, said Kevin Gideon, plant manager. Weve built some of the worlds best vehicles and built tremendous customer loyalty during that time. A heartfelt thank-you goes to the men and women of this plant, our community and our customers, who have made Norfolk Assembly something special.

Norfolk opened in 1925 and produced 7,983,458 cars and trucks over the years. Production of the Ford F-150 will be continued at Dearborn Truck Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant, the other two producers of the countrys best-selling light pickup.

Norfolk Assembly Plant is one of 16 Ford facilities to be idled under the companys plan to return its North American automotive operations to profitability.

Perfect Weather Forecast at Richmond Tonight; Will Big Moon Be a "BAD" Moon & Influence Tempers?

Current NASCAR

The weather forecast for tonight's Richmond Cup race looks perfect, but will that Big Moon influence tempers? Will Danica salute David? Will he tell her to just shut up and drive? Will we see any kick boxing? Will any more RCR crew members be feeling their oats post race? Will there be penalties forthcoming after 400 laps on "The Action Track?"

Who'll save tires and brakes? Who'll slap the turn two wall?

I LOVE short track racing under the lights!

Any predictions?

I wouldn't be surprised if "The Legend" didn't have a "Groucho Special!"

Lovebirds in the Grandstand (Eat your heart out, Gilder)

Current NASCAR

If you watched Friday night's Nationwide race from Richmond, you saw a great, competitive race featuring side-by-side and nose to tail competition and a terrific close.

If you watched the finish you saw an on track incident between Nelson Piquet, Jr. and Brian Scott that carried over outside the cars resulting in Nelson delivering a low kick to Scott's groin. Later in the evening, two RCR crewmen were arrested and taken to Henrico County, Va. jail following another altercation.

Johanna Long posted a top-15 finish, as well.

But the highlight of the televised show may have been the shot of the lovebirds high above the closed (except to them) backstretch grandstands. Very sweet. Eat your heart out, Jeff. It was date night!
