I don't know how many of you folks remember this.... I'm getting too old and I'm not even sure of the date now...
But, one year in the early 80s, when we got to Atlanta for Cup weekend... I think it was the November race... there had been a bad dry spell and Mr. Nix and Mr. Helton (who were at that time looking after the track) skimped (to save time & money) on re-mowing the grassy "parking" area behind the old backstretch before race day.
They hadn't counted on what would happen when all the heat from those new fangled clackytacky (catalytic) converters met the tall, dry, unmowed grass. A bunch of fans' vehicles were burned up in the ensuing "parking lot" fire on Sunday Cup race day!

Interesting piece on SPEED by Mike Hembree the other day. Talks about limiting crowd size at Eldora Truck race because you can't park fans' vehicles in the farmers' hay fields in rural Ohio. Also mentions no traditional pit stops, though the race format hasn't been announced.

Roger Slack finds himself in the busy middle of one of the biggest NASCAR stories in recent history.
Slack is the general manager of Eldora Speedway, the half-mile dirt track that will become a motorsports capital of sorts this summer.
On July 24, Eldora, located in Rossburg, OH, will host the Camping World Truck Series, marking the first time a major NASCAR series has raced on dirt since September 1970, when the Cup series left clay behind.
Slack has six months to prepare for dozens of truck haulers and team and NASCAR support vehicles, the influx of national television and radio, probably his biggest crowd of journalists ever and a crowd that will test the speedways infrastructure.
The race already is close to a sellout. Only a few hundred reserved seat tickets and about 1,000 general admission tickets for the tracks grassy hillside remain available. Slack is expecting a crowd of between 20,000 and 22,000 and said he probably could swell twice that many tickets if the track had available seating and parking.
Parking is somewhat limited near the track in the summer because and this is not an excuse at many speedways adjacent farm fields will still be covered with hay.
This is rural Ohio, said Slack of the track, which is located on State Road 118, not exactly a major thoroughfare. We cant park cars on fields where theres hay. And were not going to add seats. Its not fair to the fans to overload them on traffic.
Although SAFER barriers will not be added to the track for the Truck event, numerous other changes are planned. The tracks pit entry and pit exit will be modified, as will other access areas that allow pedestrians to cross the racing surface. The tracks press box will be converted to allow for separate radio and television broadcasts of the event.
Officials will add three more scoring loops.
The race format has not been determined, but Slack said the race evening will unfold in much the same fashion as other Eldora events with qualifying, heat races and a feature. There will not be traditional pit stops.
The breadth of ticket sales illustrates the vivid interest in the race. Slack said tickets have been sold in 48 states (with the exceptions of Montana and Hawaii) and seven Canadian provinces. He said about 70 percent of the ticket-buyers will be first-time visitors to Eldora.

Remember when Pepsi came out with those big glass pint bottles in the late 60s that they advertised as "Half Quart" bottles, which, of course, they were, since there are two pints in a quart, duh. Guess they were afraid the big bottles would be perceived as fattening, so they came out with their Girl Watching ad campaign and Diet Pepsi:

I am thinking that since we promote history, sometime or another we ought to dip back into the 60s and get the original members of a particular group together to perform at one of the Beach Tracks - Daytona, Myrtle, Langley, etc.
While my adopted hometown of Wilson, NC was bringing us superb dirt track racing and world famous cue, it also brought us a band that performed one of the reknowned male national anthems.
I am talking about Wilson's O'Kaysions , who in 1968 had " I'm a Girl Watcher " on the national charts.
Maybe ole brother Jeff could round 'em up and we could have a stag night, while our female members do their nails or something. Whatta ya think boys?
Should we start lining up the young ladies, Jeff?
