Big One Came Early; Junior Taps Marcos & Crashes Daytona Test Field

Current NASCAR

Perhaps Dale, Jr. was trying out some of his new potato chips and decided it was crunch time!

Big One Came Early; Junior Taps Marcos & Crashes Daytona Test Field

Current NASCAR

Turned on SPEED Channel just long enough to see a replay of Dale, Jr. turning Marcos Ambrose into the back straight wall and initiating a pretty good sized draft pack crash at Daytona. Two cars for RPM, Roush cars, couple of Hendrick mounts.

Brad says you got to crash 'em to learn.

Testing has gotten combative.

Ole 5-time was laying back outta the draft. Not involved. Lives to test another day. Not so for those others with no backup cars.

A NEW YEAR--AN OLD RACE--A NEW NAME

Current NASCAR

How 'bout "The Wringer" as Daytona tries to fleece a few more bucks out of the fans and Sprint tries to ring our chimes?

Sprint Unlimited sounds like a car that ought to have a wing and be running on a mid-west dirt track.

Do you have 1950s era NSSN or similar?

Stock Car Racing History

While Fonda did take place the night before Plattsburg, I also don't see Fireball lsited in that race. Wonder if it was another driver Mr. McGrath remembered?

Stock Car Racing History

Again, related to the Airborne Speedway race at Plattsburg, found this interesting tidbit in an old Bill Ladabouche column from "Racin' Paper" about Catamount Stadium history and competitor and flagman, Pat McGrath:

Pat McGrath had always been fascinated with the big-time racing since he had watched a Grand National at Airborne Speedway in the 1950s. At that particular race, Lee Petty had won the race, but the human interest story was with Glen Fireball Roberts, whose car had been wrecked the night before at Fonda. Roberts was running for points and he could not arrange to borrow any competitors car. As it turned out, a fan stepped forward, Roberts took the mans car, taped up the headlights, put a belt around the door post, and raced the car as carefully as he could, garnering needed points for the night. Happy driver; happier fan.

This small photo shows two Grand National Oldsmobiles in the pits at that Airborne race.

What is particularly interesting about this story to me is that I don't see Fireball Roberts listed as being in the race in the rundown at Racing Reference.

Chase, I don't know if you have looked at the "History of Airborne Speedway" videos, but they may contain some information about the 6-19-1955 Lee Petty win. I haven't waded through them, but here are links:

Worthy of RacersReunion Radio Live Broadcast Coverage?

General

While searching around the other day for interesting New Year's Eve celebrations, I became aware of the famed Falmouth, Pennsylvania Goat Drop at the stroke of midnight each new year. It's actually a stuffed goat.

Falmouth, I came to know, is home to the world famous Falmouth Goat Race each September. The goat races are so famous, in fact, that Falmouth's sister city of Falmouth, England sends a delegation each year to attend the races.

If all of this news isn't exciting enough, factor in that the races are held just down river on the Susquehanna from Three-Mile Island, home of the near catastrophic nuclear meltdown some years back. With any luck, you and your goat may be glowing in the dark upon your return home from the races. You'll be just like all those racers living in the shadow of the Duke Nuclear Power Station on Lake Norman around Mooresville! Think of the electricity savings you'll accrue by not having to turn on your lights at night!

The thought has certainly occurred to me that either the Goat Drop or Goat Races or both could be ideal candidates for a live remote RR broadcast in the future. What do you folks think?

We could have Beach Music from Jack Walker on the banks of the Susquehanna and Reverend Stagger could baptize a few lost souls in the river. Just thinking out loud. What do you folks think? Pennsylvania is serious racing country.

The goat race organizers have an excellent website at

http://www.falmouthgoatrace.org/

and there are also numerous videos posted documenting the races. Feel free to share your thoughts with Jeff.
