At Atlanta on November 3, 1985 The Wood Brothers Made Me a Hero

Thanks, folks. Oh, it is also Derrike Cope's birthday today. I never had any trouble remembering it!

That was a pretty tacky way to solicit wasn't it?!
November 3, 1985 was my 12th wedding anniversary and the Wood Brothers crew made a sign on the windshield of their car cover before the start of the Atlanta Journal 500 to salute my wife back in Dallas, Texas. The tv cameras picked it up for me and Grand National Scene printed a photo. Kyle Petty crashed out on lap 267 at Atlanta International Raceway that day.
Sorry to hear such terrible news.
And, a logical thought at that.
Oh, by the way... Legend will be happy to note that I spied Rebel flags in the down under coverage!
Exhibition, eh? By golly we ran a few NASCAR exhibitions in Japan... that country where Danica Patrick can win a race.
Remember Calder Park in Australia? I remember Bob Jane spending about a year traveling on the Winston Cup circuit in the mid 80s before he built his 1 1/4-mile Australian Superspeedway.
Here's the opening segment of the telecast of the first NASCAR event there.
I guess this comes under the category of adding insult to injury. You own an interest in an engine building company, but you're not going to use your own brand. Will the collaborative Earnhardt/Childress engine business now evaporate? I bet Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick would like to get their hands on some Hendrick power.

EGR switching from Earnhardt to Hendrick engines
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Earnhardt Ganassi Racing is switching engine suppliers, and going away from its namesake company.
The struggling two-car team with Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya is making the move from Earnhardt Childress Racing engines next season, when it will instead get engines from Hendrick Motorsports.
Richard Childress said Friday that he has no plans to change the name of the engine program that is housed at his team's shop. He says it's still a strong operation and that there will be new customers for next year that will be announced later.
Earnhardt Childress Racing was formed when Richard Childress Racing merged its engine-building operation with Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Sprint Cup team in 2007. DEI then merged with Chip Ganassi Racing in late 2008 and changed its team name.
The names would have to be changed to protect the innocent!
I shoulda known Johnny could add the right perspective to this buckling issue!
