Darrell Waltrip wraps up his first Winston Cup Championship and Bobby Allison wins the race in a hard fought battle with Joe Ruttman with Terry Labonte finishing in the 3 rd spot. Dale Earnhardt finished 4 th (after a rough first lap) then a surprising 5th place finish was posted by Joe Millikan with Darrell Waltrip finishing up in 6 th .

The Tower in this shot was actually the control tower for the drag strip at Ontario Motor Speedway (which ran down pit lane). It was brought over earlier in 1981 and erected in the spot shown. The position of the tower ruined the view for about 50 prime seats in the upper corner of the stands in turn 6. I remember talking to a few of the people who had to move to another location. Some of them had renewed the same seat for years. Mad would be an understatement.
Scrambling out of the grandstands, soaking wet, just wanting to get to the travel trailer and get warm and dry,
I hopped up on the fence and did a 'point & shoot" as the 9 car went by on the "cool down" lap after Elliott had received the checkered flag. Blurry but........
If my memory serves, the Digard car that Jimmy Insolo drove was the car that Bobby raced at Atlanta in the event preceding the WW500. The team had a heck of a time trying to get a "left turn" car to turn right
I do not have a photo of that one, but my uneducated guess is that it was a Bill Schmitt car.
Here is Schmitt in 1985:

I was 4 years old at the time................
36 years ago, Neil Bonnett wins in the Jim Stacy No. 5 Dodge over Richard Petty in a close finish with Cale Yarborough in 3rd and Buddy Baker in 4th - the only cars to finish on the lead lap.
This was my first race with a camera and I didn't take many shots, and the ones I did take aren't very good. The camera I used was borrowed (from my boss at the time) and I spent more time trying not to drop the thing than figuring out how to use it. It was an expensive Minolta for that time. I did find my photo prints for this race but can't locate the negativeswhich Ineed toreproduce a better result. When I do find the negs, I'll scan them and update this post.
